The Federal Aviation Administration said it is investigating a close call between a SkyWest Airlines plane and a U.S. Air Force jet over North Dakota.

According to Reuters, SkyWest Flight 3788, an Embraer ERJ-175 operating as a Delta Connection flight from Minneapolis to Minot, North Dakota, performed a go-around during its landing approach when the military aircraft appeared without warning.

The SkyWest pilot said he performed an “aggressive maneuver” to avoid a B-52 bomber.

In video footage captured by a passenger, the pilot reassured everyone on the aircraft after making the maneuver.

“For those of you on the right hand side, you probably saw the airplane kind of, sort of coming at us. Nobody told us about it,” the pilot said.

“So given his speed, it was a military. I don’t know how fast they were going,” he continued.

“So, sorry about the aggressive maneuver. It caught me by surprise, this is not normal at all,” he added.

Reuters provided further info:

The Air Force confirmed a B-52 aircraft assigned to Minot Air Force Base conducted a flyover of the North Dakota State Fair on Friday. “We are currently looking into the matter,” the Air Force said.

The SkyWest pilot reportedly said the incident caught him by surprise, prompting him to make an aggressive move to avoid a possible collision, according to a video recording posted by a passenger on social media. SkyWest did not immediately comment on the video or confirm its accuracy.

Representative Betty McCollum, a Minnesota Democrat, said she was highly concerned with the incident.

“The incident in Minot raises serious questions about passenger safety,” McCollum said. “Given the Department of Defense training that takes place in the surrounding area, Minot International Airport must also immediately receive and install radar technology to have a full accounting of all local air traffic.”

The FAA noted that air traffic services were provided by the Minot air traffic control tower, which is run by a private company and not FAA employees.

Monica Green, who recorded video of the pilot making the announcement, told CBS News it felt like a “sharp turn on a roller coaster.”

“The force of it kept me centered in my seat, but I could look out the window and see straight at the grass instead of seeing the horizon,” Green continued.

“Just out of the blue, just sort of very abrupt U-turn,” she added.

“Video of the B-52 bomber aircraft flying over the North Dakota State Fair. It was taken at the time of the near miss with a SkyWest Flight operating as a Delta connection between Minneapolis and Minot. The flight can be seen in the video,” KMOT wrote.

More from CBS News:

The SkyWest flight had 76 passengers and four crew members on board at the time. B-52 bombers typically carry a crew of five, and the military aircraft was streaking low over Minot on its way to a flyover at the North Dakota State Fair.

“The flyover was planned in advance and approved by the Federal Aviation Administration,” Minot Air Force Base said on Monday.

The base said it communicated the flyover plans to Minot Approach Control and that the B-52 crew “communicated the flyover plan to both RAPCON and Minot International Airport’s air traffic control tower.”

“The B-52 crew contacted Minot International Airport tower and the tower provided instructions to continue 2 miles westbound after the flyover,” the base said. “The tower did not advise of the inbound commercial aircraft.”
