Markwayne Mullin has officially been sworn in as the new secretary of Homeland Security.
On Tuesday, in the Oval Office, Mullin was sworn in by Attorney General Pam Bondi. He is the first ever Native-American to hold the position.
Mullin was confirmed into the position on Monday evening in a 54–45 vote.
Former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem was ousted from the position in early March after President Donald Trump announced she would be transitioning to a new role, “special envoy for the Shield of the Americas.”
In a Truth Social post announcing the move, Trump thanked Noem for her dedicated service.
The Shield of the Americas is a new multinational security initiative and coalition of the U.S.
Its core mission focuses on:
- Dismantling drug cartels and transnational criminal organizations.
- Countering illegal immigration and human smuggling.
- Promoting broader Western Hemisphere security.
