A search is currently underway for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC host Savannah Guthrie, who went missing from Tucson’s Catalina Foothills on Saturday. After her family reported her missing on Sunday morning, police discovered “concerning” signs of a violent struggle at her home.
The victim’s daughter, Savannah Guthrie, is a broadcast journalist and TV personality best known as the co-anchor of NBC’s “Today” show.
Meanwhile, authorities are treating the disappearance as a high-priority investigation.
Nancy was last seen in the Catalina Foothills area of Tucson, Arizona, on Saturday evening. After authorities searched the 84-year-old’s home, investigators say they “saw some things at the home that were concerning to us.”
“We believe now, after we’ve processed that crime scene, that we do in fact have a crime scene – that we do in fact have a crime,” Pima County Sherriff Chris Nanos said during a press briefing on Monday. “She did not leave on her own, we know that.”
Nanos also described the circumstance as suspicious.
“Nancy Guthrie is of great, sound mind. This is not dementia-related. She is as sharp as a tack,” he continued. “The family wants everybody to know this isn’t somebody who just wandered off.”
However, Nanos noted that she needs to take medication on a daily basis, emphasizing that it “could be fatal” if she does not take it.
The case was initially treated as a search-and-rescue operation, with teams including volunteers, dogs, border patrol agents, and helicopters dispatched overnight. However, the active search has since been suspended after yielding no leads.
Time is of the essence in locating Nancy. Police reiterated that although she does not have any cognitive issues, she “is very limited in her mobility” and urgently needs her daily medication.
Her daughter released a statement, read by fellow journalist Craig Melvin, on the “Today” show on Monday.
“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” the statement read. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom. “We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.”
