A military helicopter made an emergency landing near Camp Pendleton in Southern California on Friday, catching fire and causing potential traffic delays.

The incident occurred along Interstate 5 near Oceanside.

“Multiple emergency crews are on the scene in Oceanside, California, responding to an incident where a military helicopter made an emergency landing and crashed on Camp Pendleton. The crash prompted an immediate response from base personnel and local emergency services, who are working to secure the area and assess the situation,” Rawsalerts wrote.

“Officials have issued a public advisory, urging people to avoid the crash site to allow crews to perform their duties without interference. At this time, officials say no military personnel were injured from the crash and everyone onboard was evacuated safely,” the post added.

KCRA 3 reports:

Major Natalie Batcheler of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing told NBC that around 4 p.m. a CH53-E Super Stallion, based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, experienced an engine fire during a regular training flight.

All crew were able to exit the aircraft safely, Batcheler said.

No crash was involved, Batcheler said, and the base will consider the incident a “mishap.”

Aerial video showed thick flames engulfing the body of the helicopter. The crash occurred near Interstate 5 in North County, and a long line of cars appeared to stop and watch, backing up traffic in the area.

Per ABC7 Los Angeles:

The chopper touched down in an open area west of the freeway and north of Aliso Creek Rest Area on the grounds of the northern San Diego County military base about 4 p.m. and became engulfed in flames, according to the California Highway Patrol.

All the personnel aboard the aircraft were able to get out safely, CHP Public Affairs Officer Hunter Gerber said.

It was not immediately clear what forced the emergency landing, which led to heavier-than-usual traffic along I-5 in the area, apparently due to motorists slowing to look at the burning helicopter.
