(RightWing.org) – Law-abiding Americans, including law enforcement officials, face the consequences of President Joe Biden’s unwillingness to secure the nation’s borders. US Customs and Border Protection agents encounter nearly 100,000 migrants monthly, and no one knows with any certainty how many slip through without detection. A recent report detailed the indictment of yet another illegal foreigner — this time for shooting two New York Police Department (NYPD) officers on June 3.

Shortly after that incident, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny told reporters that the shooter, 19-year-old Bernardo Raul Castro Mata, was a suspect in a string of robberies committed throughout Queens. He also identified Mata as a Venezuelan who crossed the border illegally at Eagle Pass, Texas, in July of 2023.

On June 26, the Queens County District Attorney’s Office issued a press release announcing the arraignment of Mata earlier that day after a New York grand jury indicted for attempting to shoot and kill two NYPD officers.

The statement explained that two NYPD police officers attempted to pull Mata over after they observed him driving the wrong way down a one-way street without a helmet. However, the illegal migrant dismounted his bike and attempted to flee when police officers approached him.

NYPD officers Richard Yarusso and Christopher Abreu exited the unmarked police cruiser that initiated the stop and started chasing Mata on foot. Officer Christopher Abreu followed the fleeing suspect in the squad car while a third officer pursued Mata using the motorcycle the suspect had been operating.

Officers Yarusso and Abreu eventually caught up with Mata and wrestled with him while attempting to place him in handcuffs. Mata pulled out a firearm and shot Abreu, striking him in the upper right thigh. He also shot Yarusso, but the policeman’s bullet-resistant vest stopped the bullet.

Despite his injury, Abreu returned fire, striking Mata in the ankle and foot area. The defendant dropped his firearm, and NYPD officers placed him under arrest.

Abreu and Yarusso received treatment for their injuries at a nearby hospital, and officials released them later that day.

Mata faces two counts each of attempted murder in the first and second-degree, attempted first-degree assault, attempted aggravated assault on a police officer, and 14 other criminal charges. He faces a maximum sentence of 40 years to life if a jury convicts him on the attempted first-degree murder charges.
