The New York City Police Department Animal Cruelty Squad is searching for a man who allegedly dragged a motionless dog down a street and set it on fire.

“According to NYPD it happened Thursday just before 5 a.m. at the corner of 128th Street and 116th Avenue in South Ozone Park,” WABC wrote.

“Police are searching for a man who allegedly doused a dog with a flammable liquid and set it on fire around 5 a.m. Thursday in Queens. ASPCA and NYPD Animal Cruelty Squad are investigating,” Citizen NYC stated.

WABC shared further details:

Neighbors shared surveillance video where the man is seen dragging the dog on a leash behind him. Police say he then poured some sort of accelerant on the dog before lighting it on fire. The man then left the scene, leaving the animal behind.

“I’m a dog owner too and for people to do something like that is very wrong,” said Bhisham Pasram.

In a neighborhood where many people know each other and many have pets, there is a great deal of fear and horror.

“I have four cats at home personally. I can’t believe anyone would do something in this area. Right there on the corner is crazy,” said Nick Samaroo.

Neighbors say they don’t recognize the man in the footage or know who the dog belonged to.

CBS News has more:

Police released pictures of the man they are looking for. They said he is wanted in connection with an arson.

The man was last seen wearing a maroon sweatshirt with a Polo logo in tan lettering across the chest, gray pants and a light brown MCM backpack, officials said.

Police said the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was notified about the investigation.

The ASPCA said they are working with the NYPD and will perform a necropsy on the dog.
