The Southeastern United States is still reeling from the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene.

However, another potential major hurricane is forming in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to make landfall next week.

Reports indicated that Tropical Storm Milton has formed and could develop into a Category 3 storm or larger before making landfall.

“The National Hurricane Center now reporting that tropical storm Milton is expected to make landfall in Florida as a major Category 3 hurricane by midday Wednesday. This is a serious situation unfolding and still developing,” Rawsalerts wrote.

“I don’t like the way this is developing at all, and it’s going to happen pretty quickly,” FOX Weather Meteorologist Bryan Norcross said.

Per FOX Weather:

Milton is forecast to pick up speed early next week and turn to the east/northeast across the central and eastern Gulf of Mexico, reaching hurricane strength on Monday with rapid strengthening likely during the early part of the week, according to the NHC.

On the current schedule, Milton would arrive at the Florida Peninsula around Wednesday, although winds could increase late on Tuesday. Well in advance of the storm, waves of heavy rain are forecast beginning Sunday, especially in Central and South Florida.

“The GFS (model) and the European (model) have a significant storm offshore (of Florida on Wednesday),” Norcross said. “How significant is this? Yes, it could be a hurricane. Decent chance. And these models, they say hurricane. Could it be a strong hurricane? Category two, Category three. We can’t even rule that out.”

The National Hurricane Center is now forecasting Hurricane Milton to make landfall around the Tampa metro as a Category 3 hurricane.

CBS News reports:

As of 5 p.m. Eastern Time Saturday, Milton was centered 245 miles north of Veracruz, Mexico, and 385 miles west-northwest of Veracruz, Mexico. It had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and was inching north-northeast at 3 mph.

Milton is forecast to move across the southwestern Gulf of Mexico through Sunday night then across the south-central Gulf on Monday and Tuesday before reaching Florida’s west coast by the middle of the week, the hurricane center said.

The forecast comes a little more than a week after Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida and across the Southeast, killing at least 229 people in six states and causing immense destruction. President Biden on Thursday took an aerial tour of Florida’s Big Bend, where Helene struck as a Category 4 storm. Hundreds of people are still missing and Mr. Biden said the work to rebuild will cost “billions of dollars” as communities suffer still without power, running water and passable roads.

Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an emergency order on Saturday declaring a state of emergency in 35 Florida counties in preparation for possible landfall by Tropical Storm Milton. As Florida continues to rebuild after damages from Hurricane Helene, DeSantis said the state will “continue staging state assets to prepare for efficient search and rescue, power restoration, and roadway clearing.”
