One of the original architects of the MAGA movement is considering a run for the office of President in 2028.
At least, that’s the rumor being reported at the moment, and simultaneously being debated across social media.
This “Godfather of MAGA”, as he’s often called, would definitely bring pure strategy and TOUGH RESILIANCE to the table as a potential Presidential candidate.
Steve Bannon, love him or hate him, has consistently supported President Trump since the inception of MAGA and Trump’s initial run for the Presidency.
Even when he breaks ranks on issues — which is a GOOD sign that he’s not just an unthinking “yes man”, but an ally aligned on principle — Bannon has never shrank back from supporting President Trump.
The man even went to prison for his support!
So the question is, what’s the true story here? And is this “Exclusive” that the Daily Mail is touting full of fact, or fiction:
EXCLUSIVE: Steve Bannon is secretly plotting a sensational run for president in 2028 https://t.co/oLWbrdVVwM pic.twitter.com/uvCpxvxEkr

I’ll do my best to get to the bottom of that question in my coverage of this story.
Are recent conservative straw polls that put Bannon in the 2nd place spot behind Vance enough to have triggered a decision by the news podcaster to go after the White House?
And is Bannon currently “knifing” JD Vance in the run-up to a possible power struggle, as The Daily Mail has reported:
Steve Bannon is in the early stages of planning an audacious run for president in 2028, well-placed sources have told the Daily Mail.
The campaign would divide the Make America Great Again movement Bannon helped build by setting up a herculean battle with Vice President JD Vance, who is all but certain to launch his own 2028 candidacy, potentially with Donald Trump’s blessing.
A Bannon-Vance primary would trigger an explosive civil war within Trump’s populist movement, pitting its original architect against its institutional inheritor.
Sources close to Steve Bannon and Trump have told Daily Mail the 71-year-old War Room host has begun soliciting political advice.
One source in Bannon’s inner circle told the Daily Mail that the former strategist has privately ridiculed the prospect of Vance at the top of the ticket.
‘Love him… but Vance is not tough enough to run in 2028,’ the source said Bannon has conveyed to multiple people in his circles.
At the CPAC conference in February, conservative attendees chose Vance as the top contender for president with 61 percent of the vote – but Bannon was second with a notable 12 percent.
Both GOP sources tell the Daily Mail Bannon was crucial to helping Vance in a crowded primary race for U.S. Senate in Ohio by assisting him with nailing down a ‘MAGA’ identity.
One source described Bannon as having ‘pushed and propped him up’ to fit the role of vice president.
‘He created his image,’ the first source claimed.
I want to point out the obvious, though my readers probably caught it already.
No named sources often mean a bunch of baloney and agenda-driven reporting.
The story might be true, but if you can’t come up with a single source with the balls to be named outright… there’s no way I’m giving that story the benefit of the doubt for factual reporting.
That doesn’t mean it ISN’T true; but if your best claim to honest reporting in a story is “trust me, bruh” — I’m going to question EVERYTHING, even more than normal.
And that story isn’t running with a “maybe” he’s thinking of running.
It stands on the bold declaration that Steve Bannon is leaning heavily towards throwing his hat into the 2028 ring.
Come on. With a claim like that… you have to come up with some verifiable sources if you want to be taken seriously!
Here’s one source I could find on the issue — Bannon himself.
It should be noted that Bannon has been very consistent in not only urging President Trump to run for that infamous third term…
But he’s often prophesized that Trump WOULD be President again on Jan. 20th of 2029, as he did here with Bill Maher just 3 months ago:
Does a man who has consistently pushed President Trump to run for that third term, consistently backed President Trump, and consistently dismissed the idea of running for office himself…
Does that man suddenly, 8 months in to President Trump’s 48 month term, decide to undercut the President’s current term by making big political moves of his own behind the scenes?
That’s a hard sell, the esteem of The Daily Mail and their anonymous sources notwithstanding. (Yes, that’s sarcasm you see dripping from my words.)
In fact, Bannon has consistently claimed that President Trump IS eligible for a third term, regardless of Bill Maher’s dogmatic delivery.
That, as well as Bannon’s apparent response to the Daily Mail story was highlighted earlier today in this article from Newsweek:
Steve Bannon, former White House chief strategist during President Donald Trump’s first term, responded to the Daily Mail’s report that he is allegedly in the early stages of planning a 2028 presidential run, telling The National Pulse, “Trump 2028.”
When asked for comment on the report, Grace Chong, chief financial officer of Bannon’s War Room podcast, shared The National Pulse article with Newsweek.
Bannon, 71, is a leading voice within the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement. He served in the first Trump administration and broadly supports Trump’s agenda, but has at times broken with the president and top Trump leaders, notably former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) head Elon Musk.
The popular podcaster has repeatedly said that Trump is eligible for a third term and should run. U.S. presidents are limited to two terms in office by the Constitution, with Trump now in his second and final term.
The report comes days after Trump said that Vance would likely be favored for the top post, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio possibly joining the ticket.
While not formally involved in the second Trump administration, Bannon has played a significant role in expanding the administration’s influence, as well as its “flood the zone” approach.
Here’s the post referenced in that article in which Raheem Kassam of The National Pulse responded to the story from The Daily Mail with an article of his own.
Kassam points out, as I have, the omission of any verifiable sources in their original story… including the fact that they didn’t even talk to Bannon himself before running the story:

Does that mean The Daily Mail got it wrong?
It doesn’t conclusively prove that — and it COULD turn out that the Daily Mail has a great scoop on the facts.
But not that you can tell, or verify, from their current reporting.
And that’s the problem.
In his own story linked in that post above, Kassam points out that The Daily Mail states Bannon didn’t comment.
But he also points out that Bannon himself told him that there WAS NO request for a comment prior to publication of The Daily Mail story, as Raheem Kassam wrote in this article from The National Pulse a short time ago:
Speaking exclusively to The National Pulse on Thursday, after the publication of the Mail’s thinly sourced story, Bannon remarked, “Trump 2028.”
The Daily Mail claims Bannon did not comment on the matter, but The National Pulse can also reveal that, according to Bannon himself, no request for comment was made to Bannon before the story’s publication.
Bannon told reporters in March: “I don’t think like a politician… all I do is back President Trump and try to move the populist agenda and the America First agenda.”
He has also previously called the notion “too absurd,” though this did not stop the Mail publishing the story with a single, anonymous source.
Is it possible that Steve Bannon is foaming at the mouth by what he potentially sees as a too-weak JD Vance lining up for the 2028 GOP nomination?
Yes. It’s possible.
If there’s one thing Bannon has proven he doesn’t like, it’s weak politicians who are all bark and no bite.
One problem with the plausibility of that is that JD Vance doesn’t tend to come across as weak — at least not to me.
Maybe Bannon sees him as weak in a way I’ve never noticed.
After all, Bannon is seriously cut-throat when it comes to the no-nonsense tough approach to governing within the full power of the Executive Branch.
Just watch this clip from an interview a few days ago to get a whiff of his desire to see REAL STRENGTH back in the White House again.
Warning up front — he does not hold back in this interview. He cusses. A lot. Listen with your own discretion:
If you take power and exert it, this System’s not so tough. You know why? They’re all gutless cowards. They’ve all hid behind the System for decades and decades, and decades. — They’re not tough.
WE’RE RESILIENT. WE’RE ANTI-FRAGILE AND WE’RE TOUGH. You can put us in fucking… pic.twitter.com/9gGM1pwFpo

Here’s the full screen version of that clip for convenience:

Steve Bannon is tough.
And he’s sick and tired of puny politicians occupying space in the West Wing rather than exercising Executive Authority to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.
For that reason alone, I give the Daily Mail story just enough plausibility to keep from dismissing it as complete make-believe.
But it’s going to take more than just anonymous sources to convince me that Bannon is already gunning for President Trump’s position when he has so recently pushed President Trump to run again!
Then again… like President Trump, Bannon knows how to stir the pot at unexpected and impactful times.
The jury is still out on this story as far as I’m concerned.
What do you think?
