The U.S. State Department has issued a warning urging American citizens to leave Iran immediately due to worsening security conditions, citing a list of open border crossings.
On Friday, the U.S. Virtual Iran Embassy published a security alert, dated Thursday, saying, “U.S. citizens should expect continued internet outages, plan alternative means of communication, and, if safe to do so, consider departing Iran by land to Armenia or Türkiye.”
The embassy cited “increased security measures, road closures, public transportation disruptions, and internet blockages” as reasons for its warning.
“The Government of Iran continues to restrict access to mobile, landline, and national internet networks,” the statement warned. “Airlines continue to limit or cancel flights to and from Iran.”
The Iranian government imposed a nationwide internet shutdown on January 8th to reduce anti-government protests across all 31 provinces across the country over economic hardship and long-standing discontent. This was meant to stifle organization of demonstrations, as well as reporting of demonstrations and casualties from the government’s brutal crackdown, which has been estimated to be several thousand, with some reports saying that as many as 12,000 Iranians were killed after one week of the internet shutdown.
The embassy also emphasized that “U.S. nationals are at significant risk of questioning, arrest, and detention in Iran. Showing a U.S. passport or demonstrating connections to the United States can be reason enough for Iranian authorities to detain someone.”
Americans living in Iran are urged to exit the country immediately for their own safety while considering the possible risks involved.
“Leave Iran now,” the embassy stated. “Have a plan for departing Iran that does not rely on U.S. government help.”
The alert added, “The U.S. government cannot guarantee your safety if you choose to depart using the following options. You should leave only if you believe it is safe to do so.”
The embassy also warned that flights out of the country may be canceled with “little warning,” and that U.S. citizens looking to leave must be diligent to keep track of updates from their airlines. It instructed U.S.-Iranian dual citizens to obtain Iranian passports if they intend to exit, as the government “does not recognize dual nationality and will treat U.S.-Iranian dual nationals solely as Iranian citizens.”
Instructions and options are included for American citizens seeking to leave Iran.
The virtual embassy reminded Americans that the Armenian border is open as long as they have a valid U.S. passport, and they may stay for up to 180 days without a visa. They would also need a valid U.S. passport to cross into Türkiye for an up to 90-day visa-free stay.
U.S. citizens need to get special approval before crossing Turkmenistan’s borders. Azerbaijan may also accept individuals who have exhausted all other options of escape and have an urgent need to depart Iran.
