Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón has been defeated in his re-election bid.

Gascón has been defeated by Nathan Hochman, a Republican-turned-independent who is a former tax attorney.

In 2020, the controversial district attorney promised that he would turn back the county’s history of lock ‘em up law enforcement.

During his term he ended cash bail, declined to seek the death penalty and halted the use of sentencing enhancements, a position he partially rolled back over time.

His policies sparked controversy as Los Angeles residents launched two recall attempts, both of which failed to qualify for the ballot.

Hochman won the support of local police unions, despite Gascón being a former Los Angeles police officer.

He was also supported by victims’ advocacy groups, former District Attorney Jackie Lacey, whom Gascón defeated in 2020, and more than 70 current and former county elected officials.

According to the LAist, Hochman said that he would “make crimes illegal again.”

He has also vowed to allow prosecutors to seek the death penalty again in certain cases.
