President Donald Trump’s pick as White House press secretary has already engaged in a number of memorable exchanges with the media during her first few weeks on the job.

Most recently, Karoline Leavitt made quick work of an Associated Press correspondent who asked a question about Trump’s trade policy that she described as both factually inaccurate and insulting.

According to Fox News:

AP’s Josh Boak asked about President Donald Trump’s address at the Business Roundtable (BRT) quarterly meeting that was set to occur after the White House press briefing. He claimed that despite Trump previously touting tax cuts during his last BRT meeting in 2024, the president is now pushing “tax hikes” through tariffs.

Leavitt objected to this line of questioning, interrupting him, saying, “Not true.””I’m curious why he is prioritizing that over tax cuts,” Boak said as Leavitt responded, “He is not doing that.”

“He is actually not implementing tax hikes,” Leavitt said. “Tariffs are a tax hike on foreign countries that, again, have been ripping us off. Tariffs are a tax cut for the American people, and the president is a staunch advocate of tax cuts.”

“As you know, he campaigned on no taxes on tips, no taxes on overtime, no taxes on Social Security benefits. He has committed to all three of those things, and he expects Congress to pass them later this year,” she added.

“I’m sorry, have you paid a tariff? Because I have,” Boak responded. “They don’t get charged on foreign companies. They get charged on the importers.”

It was just the latest viral moment involving the president’s top spokesperson:

Leavitt’s rocky history with the AP dates back at least to last month, as the outlet itself reported at the time:

The Associated Press sued three Trump administration officials Friday over access to presidential events, citing freedom of speech in asking a federal judge to stop the blocking of its journalists. “We’ll see them in court,” the White House press secretary said in response.

The lawsuit was filed Friday afternoon in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., 10 days after the White House began restricting access to the news agency. It was assigned to U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden, a Trump nominee.

The AP says its case is about an unconstitutional effort by the White House to control speech — in this case not changing its style from the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” as President Donald Trump did last month with an executive order.

“The press and all people in the United States have the right to choose their own words and not be retaliated against by the government,” the AP said in its lawsuit, which names White House chief of staff Susan Wiles, deputy chief of staff Taylor Budowich and press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
