Kamala Harris disclosed that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz wasn’t her first choice as a running mate in the 2024 presidential election.
Harris said Pete Buttigieg was her first choice.
According to reports, The Atlantic obtained an excerpt from her upcoming book, “107 Days.”
Harris reportedly thought the former transportation secretary was “too big of a risk.”

Harris ultimately tapped Walz, the governor of Minnesota, for the role and together, the pair went on to lose the popular vote, Electoral College and every single swing state to former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.
In her book, Harris explained that Buttigieg topped her list of eight potential running mates because “he is a sincere public servant with the rare talent of being able to frame liberal arguments in a way that makes it possible for conservatives to hear them.”
“I love Pete,” she wrote. “I love working with Pete. He and his husband, Chasten, are friends.”
Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., who burst onto the national political scene when he ran in the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries, is an early favorite get the party’s nod in 2028.
An Emerson College survey, released in June, found Buttigieg leading Harris — 16% to 13% — in a hypothetical Democratic presidential primary, with California Gov. Gavin Newsom (12%), Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (7%) and “Squad” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (7%) close behind.

Last week, The Atlantic published a separate excerpt of “107 Days” in which Harris suggested that Biden’s choice to run for reelection in 2024 amounted to “recklessness.”
“And of all the people in the White House, I was in the worst position to make the case that he should drop out,” Harris said in the excerpt. “I knew it would come off to him as incredibly self-serving if I advised him not to run.”
“He would see it as naked ambition, perhaps as poisonous disloyalty, even if my only message was: Don’t let the other guy win,” she added.
She has also accused Biden staffers of “adding fuel” to negative stories about her during her time as vice president.
Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., seemingly agreed. He told NBC’s “Meet the Press” earlier this month that Biden “should not have run” for reelection.
