Joe Biden recently underwent surgery to treat skin cancer, a spokesperson said.
“Biden’s personal office said he is recovering well from the procedure known as Mohs surgery,” NBC News reports.
“Mohs surgery is a procedure used to treat skin cancer. This surgery involves cutting away thin layers of skin. Each thin layer is looked at closely for signs of cancer. The process keeps going until there are no signs of cancer,” Mayo Clinic stated.
“The goal of Mohs surgery is to remove all of the skin cancer without hurting the healthy skin around it. Mohs surgery allows the surgeon to be sure that all the cancer is gone. This makes it more likely that the cancer is cured. It reduces the need for other treatments or more surgery,” it added.
“The revelation comes after worrying photos and video surfaced showing the 82-year-old with what appeared to be a giant wound on his head,” Fox News noted.

More from NBC News:
It’s unclear exactly when Biden underwent the surgery. He was pictured leaving a church in Greenville, Delaware, late last month with a large, visible incision in his head.
Biden, 82, underwent surgery to remove cancerous skin cells during his term as president. In 2023, a cancerous skin lesion was removed from his chest during a routine physical exam, Biden’s physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, said in a memo at the time.
A biopsy had revealed the lesion as basal cell carcinoma, one of the two most common forms of skin cancer, which is also treated using Mohs surgery.
Following the 2023 procedure, O’Connor wrote that “all cancerous tissue was successfully removed” and that “no further treatment is required.”
Former first lady Jill Biden similarly had a pair of cancerous skin lesions removed in 2023, one above her eye and the other on her chest, that were also identified as basal cell carcinoma.
Footage showing Biden with a scar on his head circulated on social media:

The latest development adds to Biden’s health struggles. In May, it was revealed he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer that had spread to his bones.
“Cancer touches us all,” former President Biden wrote on social media at the time. “Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places.”
Doctors classified his cancer as highly aggressive, assigning it a Gleason score of 9 and a Grade Group of 5, the most severe rating.
