‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star Katherine Heigl has responded to criticism she received following her appearance at a Mar-a-Lago charity event.
On Sunday, Heigl made her first public appearance in two years to attend the Wine, Women & Shoes fundraiser benefiting Big Dog Ranch Rescue at President Donald Trump’s Florida resort.
She was quickly met with backlash from online users, who questioned her decision to attend an event at Trump’s exclusive club.
“Animals don’t vote. The only room they don’t like is the euthanasia room at a shelter…This event was about animal advocacy–something that has always been deeply personal to me,” Heigl in a statement to Just Jared.
“As a society, we should all come together to protect the voiceless and the innocent. This should not be a polarizing issue,” she added.
After the outlet shared the statement on Instagram, commenters flooded in with opinions both supporting and criticizing the actress.
In response to Heigl stating “animals don’t vote” one user said, “No, but if they did they would have better judgement than you!”
Heigl responded to the comment.
“Just curious…what do you do that really matters…do you think comments on an Instagram post matter to animals who have had humans pour gasoline on them and set them on fire? Who have had humans vote conservative or liberal but have been left to starve and suffer? Seriously…I’m very curious what you truly think matters to the voiceless and innocent…actions or just Instagram posturing?”
Big Dog Ranch Rescue brands itself as the largest, cage-free, no-kill dog rescue in the U.S. and announced that the event at Mar-a-Lago raised over $5.5 million in support for the organization.
