California Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom is reportedly preparing to challenge the 47th President-elect Donald Trump, planning a special legislative session to combat any future “unlawful” federal authority actions under the second Trump administration.

“The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack – and we won’t sit idle,” Newsom stated in a Thursday announcement.

The special session is slated to begin in the state’s Capitol on December 2nd, as Newsom, along with a team of lawmakers, work to “Trump-proof” certain California state laws.

“California is ready to fight,” Newsom wrote in an X post.

“I just called an emergency special session to help bolster our legal resources and protect our state against any unlawful actions by the incoming Trump Administration. Whether it be our fundamental civil rights, reproductive freedom, or climate action – we refuse to turn back the clock and allow our values and laws to be attacked,” Newsom added.

Newsom’s announcement follows just days after Trump won the 2024 election in a landslide, garnering 295 electoral votes, winning the popular vote, and completely smashing the Democrat’s “blue wall,” which consisted of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

Additionally, Newsom requested increased funding from California lawmakers for future litigation against Trump’s federal government, as golden state officials fear limited access to abortion and the dismantling of environmental protections.

“California has faced this challenge before, and we know how to respond. We are prepared to fight in the courts, and we will do everything necessary to ensure Californians have the support and resources they need to thrive,” Newsom continued, characterizing the special session as “the first of several actions” that the state would take to combat Trump’s policies.

Additionally, other California officials have been in agreement with Newsom’s anti-Trump rhetoric as well, announcing that they are on board with the governor’s plans to curb Trump’s policies in California.

“Trump mentioned that his campaign was a campaign to protect America,” stated Democrat Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas. “What you can expect, is California will do everything we can to protect America from Donald Trump.”

“If he comes into office and follows the law … then there’s nothing for us to do,” added California Attorney General Rob Bonta. “But if he violates the law, as he has said he would, as Project 2025 says he will, then we are ready. We have gone down to the detail of what court do we file in.”

However, Trump has explained many times that he was not apart of, did not author, and did not even fully read the Heritage Foundation’s “Project 2025.” In fact, Trump has even said that there’s many aspects of it that he doesn’t agree with. Nevertheless, Democrats continue to spew the same misleading, false talking points in order to instill fear and make their point.

Republican Assembly Leader James Gallagher also responded to Newsom’s plans, asserting that California “will try to establish themselves as the anti-Trump state.”

“How they responded to the first Trump administration was about politics and not really about looking out for the best interest of California,” Gallagher stated.

California Democrat assembly member Cottie Petrie-Norris, the chair of the committee on Newsom’s most recent special session, similarly revealed that she was supportive of protecting California’s best interests.

“We were certainly the heart of the resistance during Trump’s first term, and I think that will continue in the second term,” she stated on Wednesday. “But I also don’t think we want to get ourselves trapped in this position where it’s resistance for resistance’s sake and performance art.”
