Republicans have surpassed Democrats in Nevada’s active voter registrations for the first time in about 20 years.

By a slim 187 margin, the GOP now has more registered voters in the critical battleground state.

“The Nevada Secretary of State’s Office said that as of Tuesday, Feb. 4, there were 618,539 active registered Republicans in the Silver State. That’s a 187-person lead over the 618,352 registered Democrats,” KRNV wrote.

The state has 696,319 non-partisan voters.

From the Associated Press:

The last time Republicans had an edge over Democrats in voter registration was in 2007. Both parties, meanwhile, remain outnumbered by nonpartisan voters, who now make up 33% of Nevada’s 2.1 million active registered voters.

The shift helps cement its status as a purple state and could make it more difficult for Democrats to defend two U.S. Senate seats and win back the presidency. That hurdle comes as the party faces a growing challenge to regain power in Washington.

Since the pandemic, Democrats have watched with alarm as their advantage in the state has eroded. Registered Democrats in January 2020 made up 38% of the state’s electorate, leading GOP voters by more than 83,000. Republicans since then had been slowly closing that gap.

Las Vegas Review-Journal reports:

That contrasts with registration from December 2024, when Democrats made up 626,538 of the more than 2 million voters in Nevada, and Republicans numbered 622,371, according to the voter registration statistics of that time period.

The decrease in registered voters for both parties between December and January is due to post-election voter roll purges, and it is typical voter roll maintenance, according to GOP strategist Jeremy Hughes.

Republicans have been closing the gap both before and after the 2024 election. In October, Republicans were 9,000 voters behind Democrats, and were about 6,000 behind in November. Those voter registration numbers “were a precursor to Donald Trump’s victory,” Hughes said.

At the beginning of 2024, there were 36,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans, according to voter registration data.
