Glenn Beck: My friend Sean Spicer, how are you, sir?
Sean Spicer: Iām fantastic.
Glenn Beck: How are you?
Sean Spicer: Iām so good, Iām so good.
Glenn Beck: I donāt want you to tell the end of the story yetāI want you to start at the beginning. What happened when you left the White House and Biden took over as president?
Sean Spicer: Iāll take you back one step further.
Sean Spicer: OK, so I stepped down as White House press secretary, and the president has always been kind and offered to appoint me to a couple of boards. He appointed me to two of themāone of them was the White House Commission on Fellows, where I was a commissioner, and then he also was kind enough to make me one of his appointees to the Board of Visitors to the U.S. Naval Academy.
Sean Spicer: So I was sworn into office. Joe Biden comes into officeāand so on. January 28, myself and all of the White House commissioners at that fellowship committee resigned because itās a White House commission and the new president has a right to have people for White House commissions.
Glenn Beck: Fair enough.
Sean Spicer: Well, on September first I get an email in 2021 that says, āDear Mr. Spicer, thank you for your service on the U.S. Naval Academy Board of Visitors. By 6 oāclock tonight, please submit your resignation or you will be fired.ā And I thought, āWhoa, what?ā
Sean Spicer: Now, just for context, remember, Glennāon September first, my term ended November first. Sixty days later I was like, āYou couldnāt wait 60 days just to have it for free.ā So I was like, āIāve been sworn into office. My term was, you know, ended at that time.ā And I obviously wasnāt going to get reappointedāBiden had his right to appoint his people.
Sean Spicer: Great, so it turns out that he fired everybodyāmyself from the Naval Academy Board, Russ Vogt from the Naval Academy Board, and then a guy named H.R. McMaster from the West Point Board. By the way, H.R. McMasterāyou remember, was the National Security Advisor to Trump, a three-star Army general who was a graduate of West Point and a distinguished professor there.
Sean Spicer: And the Friday after that, the Tuesday email was going to be honored at West Point as a distinguished alumni in their awards ceremony. So anyway, he fires us on September first. I donāt resignāI said, āIf youāre not resigning, you can fire me if you want.ā
Sean Spicer: And then Stephen Miller in America First came to me and said, āWe have an idea.ā I said, āOK, whatās the idea?ā He goes, āWe want to sue Biden.ā Now, Glenn, Iām not a lawyerāI said, āGuys, I watch a lot, a lot, a lot of Law & Order.ā
Sean Spicer: But how in Godās earthāif we sue the guy in September (I mean, my term ends November first)āweāre never going to get back on the board. And they said, āNo, no, no. Letās go to court and make Joe Biden argue that he has the absolute authority to fire anybody.ā And because weāre not going to win the case, theyāll rule against us.
Sean Spicer: And I was like, āOh, this is brilliantāthe only people.ā But hereās the kicker: the only people who were willing to put their name on that lawsuit are myself and Russ Vogt. Of all the other people that were so honored that President Trump had appointed them, they went to everyone and said, āHey, will you sign on to this?ā And they said, āThanks, weāre busy.ā Russ votes.
Sean Spicer: So the case became Spicer et al. v. Biden. It goes up to the court; the court says the president has the absolute authority to fire anyone. Then we appeal the decisionāit goes to the appeals level, and the court again reaffirms the decision that Joe Biden, and the president of the United States, have the absolute authority to fire anyone.
Glenn Beck: And then the media started calling you, Glenn, saying, āYou lost the case.ā
Sean Spicer: And I said at the time, did Iā¦
Sean Spicer: So Donald Trump gets electedāand this is where it gets really fun. Youāll love this. And now you know the rest of the story. Here he comes: āThank you, Paul Harvey.ā
Sean Spicer: So I write this story in an op-ed for the New York Post saying, āHey, guess what? Spicer v. Biden has given President Trump the authority to fire anyone he wants. I hope that President Trump executes it.ā And the White House is tweeting it, sending me messages back, āGuess who we just fired? Guess who we just fired?ā And Iām living in this glory.
Sean Spicer: Well, I write this piece for the New York Post explaining, āHey, hereās what we did. Hereās the legal basis. All of these people who are about to get fired by Trump should thankāPresident Biden for this.ā Now hereās where it gets fun.
Sean Spicer: The New York Post in the editing process says to me, āOK, well, was it just the service academies?ā And I said, āNo, they had the right to fire anyone.ā And they said, āWell, give us some examples.ā So Iāve got the list of boards and commissions that the president can appoint toāthere are like a couple hundred or two.
Sean Spicer: And I start reading, and one of the editors said, āWell, they could fireāyou know, thereās the Battlefield Commission, thereās the Truman Scholarship, thereās the Kennedy Center.ā She goes, āOh, put that in the op-ed. Put thatāpeople will identify with that,ā and we wentāwe added a couple of other examples to the op-ed. So the op-ed gets published in the New York Post and it gets a lot of coverage, whatever, and President Trump continues to fire people.
Sean Spicer: And when they fire the board of the Kennedy Center, The Washington Post callsāyou know, the spokesman for the Kennedy Centerāand he says, āAre you going to be opposing President Trump firing you?ā And on the record, the spokesman for the Kennedy Center says, āWe canāt; Spicer v. Biden sets the precedent for this, gives the president the authority to do this.ā
Glenn Beck: So now, hereās the kicker: The Washington Post called you and said, āWhat do you think about what the Kennedy Center is saying?ā
Sean Spicer: Now, I have a hard enough time keeping up with President TrumpāI donāt focus on what the Kennedy Center is saying, Iām sorry. Thatās really not my thing. So I said, āI donāt know.ā And they go, āAre you serious? You donāt know? They just cited your case as the reason that they canāt oppose or object to what President Trump just did.ā And I said, āOh my God, thatās amazing. Iām glad to have played a small part in it.ā
Sean Spicer: A day later, the reporter calls me back and says, āI went and read all of the court documentsāand youāre right.ā And I said, āOf courseāwhat do you mean? Yeah, I wasnāt lying to you.ā And he said, āIāve got to write this big story.ā And I said to my team at the timeāmy familyāI was like, āOh my God, this is not going to go well.ā
Sean Spicer: The Washington Post wants to write a story about Spicer v. Biden and why itās given the president the authority toāthen I get a text and it says, āHey, weāre runningāweāre putting the story up.ā And I go, āOh, like theseādonāt these things not end well for people like me and people like you? Itās likeāyou donāt get that. Itās like getting a call from the IRS. It doesnāt go well when they go, āHey, Iām from The Washington Post and Iām writing a story about Glenn Beck.āā
Sean Spicer: Yeah. Thank you. So I click on the story and Iām reading, and Iām like, āOK, OK, OKālike whenās the bad part coming?ā And the only part isāI normally, you know, thereās that phrase, Glenn, where people say that they hate-watch MSNBC or somethingāyeah, yeahāand I hate, I hate reading the comments. I had to do it; I had to do it.
Sean Spicer: I normally will not read the commentsāI donāt read the Twitter replies or whateverābut I read the comments, and these snowflakesātheyāre so offended. Theyāre like, āSean Spicerās an evil person pursuing the president.ā Iām like, āWait a second. You have to understand the context. Never in the history of the United States had any president ever removed somebody from a service academy board prior to their term being done for anything less than malfeasanceāand even that, we canāt find an example.ā
Sean Spicer: Never. Joe Biden was so petty. And the point is, theyāre mad at me. The commentsāthere are like thousands of comments when you click on The Washington Post story, and I posted it on all my social media stories if someone wants to go read it. And I was like, āWait a secondāyouāre mad at me?ā Theyāre like, āI canāt believe you did this.ā And Iām like, āWait, wait, waitāI did nothing. I literally had 60 days to go. Iām sure I would have gotten some little, you know, medallion from the Naval Academy. So thanks for your service. Be on your way.ā
Sean Spicer: And yet here they areālike all these snowflakes putting comments in The Washington Post that say Iām the bad guy. Because why? Because I stood up and said, āHey, you want to argue that you have to do this, then give a future Republican presidentā¦ā Now, at the time, Russ Vogt and I had no idea that President Trump hadnāt even declared for reelection yet, but we thought to ourselves, āHey, you know what? Weāll stand up now.ā Like I said, I watch a lot of Law & Order, but thatās my legal prowess here.
Sean Spicer: So the idea that this caseāwhich we thought at the time, āHey, letās try itāāhas now become the basis for which President Trump can run around and say, āYouāre fired!ā is, legit, amazing. And Iām justāIām like, āIt.ā The Post wrote in the story that I was giddyāI think thatās an understatement. I am so ecstatic that not just that President Trump can execute on this strategy, but that it was Joe Biden who set the president and gave us this gift is such sweet poetic justice.
Sean Spicer: You know, whenever anybody tries to force their way, it never ends wellānever ends well. But think about this: they tried to de-platform Trump, they censored him, they took him off the ballot, they sued him civilly and criminallyāand it just, it backfired, backfired, backfired. Learn your lesson, folks.
Sean Spicer: I just get such a kick out of this because these dum-dums keep thinking if we just go after him one more time, itāll workāand it doesnāt. So what is the strategy now? Do you think they haveā I mean, because none of this is workingāI hope that itās continued. I just love the fact that they keepāthey double down on stupid, and theyāre like, āWhat if we just try it one more time?ā And Iām like, āGod bless you.ā
Sean Spicer: But the idea is just, at some point you take the loss and just say, āLetās regroup. Letās retreat. Heās not running again. Maybe we stop making it about him and we think about what weāre for.ā I donāt tend to give a ton of advice to the Democratic Party, but at some point recognize that for ten years youāve tried to say that Donald Trumpās the problem and weāre going to come up against himāand it hasnāt worked. So maybe, just maybe, you try to rethink this whole strategy. Look, I donāt really careāthatās their problem, not mine.
Sean Spicer: I performed at the Kennedy Center 10, 12, 15 years ago, and it almost took an act of Congress to make that happen. I mean, you can rent out the Kennedy Center and do whatever you want on there. Well, they had a problem with me, and they told me at the timeāI was the first show ever done at the Kennedy Center that displayed the American flag on stage. I found that incredible. But I donāt care what happens at the Kennedy Centerāit doesnāt matter to me.
Sean Spicer: But the left is freaking outātheyāre just freaking out. See, hereās the thing: thereās a bigger arc that I think is taking place. In the first term, we were somewhat apologeticāwe were like, āYeah, you know, remember that, just think about this, and remember the Kennedy Center is just one thing.ā So President Trump can keep firing everybody, but when we came into office, the Kennedy Center Honorsāright, which is supposed to be this annual thing where all these leftists get awards and celebrate each otherāthey said, āWe wonāt come if Trump shows up.ā And so Trump was actually magnanimous and said, āYou know what? You guys go on, have your eventāI wonāt go.ā
Sean Spicer: And I think that there was a lot of feeling around and trying to understand the trappings. And like I said, it was justāit was just new. What do we do? How do we approach this? This term he says, āScrew it. Youāre all fired. Iām taking over the board. Iām in charge. Iām putting my people.ā And I love itāthis idea that we have learned that. And this is what I mean about the arc: donāt be afraid, donāt be apologetic. Fightāgo out there. Why are we ceding ground at the Kennedy Center?
Sean Spicer: Why isnāt it that Glenn Beck is the only person that puts an American flag on it? Why arenāt we saying, āYou know what? Letās bring in more people who do that. Letās be proud. Letās be patriotic. Letās use this institution to celebrate America?ā But I donāt understandāthe mentality is so different now. Itās, āLetās fight. Letās do this. Letās use this.ā And I love itāI think itās absolutely fantastic. I thank you for what you did.
Sean Spicer: And the only thing that would make it better is if you or I were on the board of the Kennedy Center and we could announce that Lee Greenwoodās residency was now taking place at the Kennedy Center. I think you, like, just so you know nowāthatās definitely not going to be the last time that we hear that. You can take credit for it, but I have a feeling we may be meeting the residency of several other country artists that come and play there. It would be fantastic. Thank you so muchāI appreciate it, Sean Spicer.
