France intends to recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September, becoming the first G7 nation to do so.

“Consistent with its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the State of Palestine. I will make this solemn announcement before the United Nations General Assembly this coming September,” French President Emmanuel Macron said.

“The urgent priority today is to end the war in Gaza and to bring relief to the civilian population. Peace is possible,” he continued.

Consistent with its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the State of Palestine.

I will make this solemn announcement before the United Nations General Assembly this coming September.

The urgent priority today is to end the war in Gaza and to bring relief to the civilian population.

Peace is possible.

We need an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and massive humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza. We must also ensure the demilitarization of Hamas, secure and rebuild Gaza. And finally, we must build the State of Palestine, guarantee its viability, and ensure that by accepting its demilitarization and fully recognizing Israel, it contributes to the security of all in the region.

There is no alternative.

The French people want peace in the Middle East. It is our responsibility — as French citizens, alongside Israelis, Palestinians, and our European and international partners — to prove that peace is possible.

In light of the commitments made to me by the President of the Palestinian Authority, I have written to him to express my determination to move forward.

Trust, clarity, and resolve.

We will achieve peace.

More from The Hill:

A reported 146 countries have recognized the state of Palestine, but France’s announcement makes it the first of the world’s leading economies, as a member of the Group of Seven (G7) nations and a member of the United Nations Security Council.

The announcement comes amid a breakdown in talks for a ceasefire and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas, the U.S.-designated terror group controlling the Gaza Strip. President Trump’s special envoy for peace missions, Steve Witkoff, put the blame on Hamas as failing to show good faith.

Macron urged an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the return of all the hostages held by Hamas and massive humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people there, where death from starvation appears to be increasing.

U.S. and Israeli officials condemned Macron’s announcement.

“The United States strongly rejects @EmmanuelMacron’s plan to recognize a Palestinian state at the
@UN general assembly. This reckless decision only serves Hamas propaganda and sets back peace. It is a slap in the face to the victims of October 7th,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said.

“We strongly condemn President Macron’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state next to Tel Aviv in the wake of the October 7 massacre. Such a move rewards terror and risks creating another Iranian proxy, just as Gaza became,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

“A Palestinian state in these conditions would be a launch pad to annihilate Israel — not to live in peace beside it. Let’s be clear: the Palestinians do not seek a state alongside Israel; they seek a state instead of Israel,” he added.

“If France is really so determined to see a Palestinian state, I’ve got a suggestion for them. Carve out a piece of the French Riviera and create a Palestinian state there,” U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee commented.

“Macron’s unilateral ‘declaration’ of a ‘Palestinian’ state didn’t say WHERE it would be. I can now exclusively disclose that France will offer the French Riviera & the new nation will be called ‘Franc-en-Stine,’” Huckabee added.

“What he says doesn’t matter,” President Trump commented.

Reuters noted:

Earlier, Canada also pressed Israel to seek peace, with Prime Minister Mark Carney condemning its “failure to prevent the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian disaster in Gaza” and reiterating support for a two-state solution.

Carney also accused Israel of violating international law over the blocking of Canadian-funded aid to civilians in the war-torn Palestinian enclave.

“Canada calls on all sides to negotiate an immediate ceasefire in good faith,” he added.

“We reiterate our calls for Hamas to immediately release all the hostages, and for the Israeli government to respect the territorial integrity of the West Bank and Gaza.”

In a diplomatic cable in June, the United States said it opposed steps to unilaterally recognise a Palestinian state, even saying it could go against U.S. foreign policy interests and draw consequences.

In June, Washington’s ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, said he did not think an independent Palestinian state remained a U.S. foreign policy goal.
