Former Congressman Matt Gaetz said he’s considering running for governor in Florida.
Gaetz told the Tampa Bay Times he’s “starting to think about running for governor” in 2026.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is term-limited and leaves office in January 2027.
Gaetz told the outlet the state’s insurance crisis is among his top policy priorities.
“I have a compelling vision for the state,” Gaetz said, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
“I understand how to fix the insurance problem, and it’s not to hand the keys to the state over to the insurance industry. If I run, I would be the most pro-consumer candidate on the Republican side,” he added.

From the Tampa Bay Times:
With the election 22 months out, Gaetz said he needs more time to pray about whether to seek Florida’s highest office and more time to discuss it with his wife, Ginger.
But Gaetz openly mulling a run is nonetheless noteworthy.
He is one of the most popular figures among the MAGA base. His support for economic populism and cannabis legalization — to say nothing of his personal controversies — would make him a unique Republican candidate.
He’s also one of the most reviled Republicans in the country by Democrats. When he got Trump’s nod to serve as attorney general, Florida Democratic Party chairperson Nikki Fried called Gaetz a “chaos agent who cares about nothing but his own personal power.”
Gaetz has been rumored to be mulling a run for governor for some time.

President Trump nominated Gaetz for attorney general in his administration, but Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration.
“I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback – and the incredible support of so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition. There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1,” Gaetz said.
“I remain fully committed to see that Donald J. Trump is the most successful President in history. I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I’m certain he will Save America,” he added.

Gaetz resigned from Congress after receiving the nomination and now hosts a show on One America News Network (OAN).
The former Florida U.S. representative said he doesn’t think the House ethics report on him will impact his ability to run for governor.
“Those lies have been told about me for years,” he said, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
“They’ve never affected my ability to win elections,” he added.

Per Reuters:
Gaetz was under investigation by the House Ethics Committee over alleged illicit drug use and of having sex with an underage 17-year-old girl. While he has denied wrongdoing, the committee found last month that he had paid tens of thousands of dollars to women for drugs and sex.
Florida has a limit of two consecutive four-year terms for governor. As a result, Florida will have to elect a new governor in 2026 once incumbent Ron DeSantis, who is already serving his second term, leaves office.
