A California councilwoman’s husband was arrested in a Walmart parking lot for allegedly repeatedly entering the United States illegally and committing multiple crimes here.

“Yadira Perez, who sits on the Coachella City Council, captured the moment when Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents surrounded them before arresting her husband, Isidro Jimenez-Ibanez,” Newsweek reports.

“ICE says the 51-year-old’s arrest was part of ‘targeted enforcement action.’ Jimenez-Ibanez had an extensive criminal record including being convicted of inflicting injury to a spouse, DUI, and assault with a de*dly weapon,” Collin Rugg wrote.

Newsweek reports:

“My family was just separated. They have taken my kids’ father. Those are the desperate cries of help,” the councilmember said in a video shared on social media. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) later said the man is a Mexican national in the country illegally, with an extensive criminal record.

Newsweek reached out to Perez via email and the FBI via phone for comment.

Jimenez-Ibanez’s arrest comes amid increased ICE operations across the country to detain illegal immigrant criminals. President Donald Trump was elected on the back of a campaign promising such action, with new Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem promising violent criminals would be swiftly deported.

Americans largely support immigration reform overall but disagree about how policies such as deportations should be carried out. A New York Times/Ipsos poll carried out from January 2 to 10 found that 55 percent of voters strongly or somewhat supported deportations. Eighty-eight percent supported “Deporting immigrants who are here illegally and have criminal records.” Large majorities of both Democrats and Republicans agreed that the immigration system is broken.

“Her husband is a previously deported Mexican illegal alien with a lengthy rap sheet of several felony convictions, including possession of a controlled substance (meth) for sale, inflicting corporal injury to a spouse, DUI, and assault with a deadly weapon, according to ICE,” Fox News national correspondent Bill Melugin wrote.

“Isidro Jimenez-Ibanez is also now looking at prosecution for felony re-entry, as federal authorities are now charging him with violation of 8 USC 1326, illegal alien found in the US after deportation, which was the reason for his FBI/ICE arrest in the Coachella parking lot. The FBI had a criminal warrant signed by a federal magistrate when they arrested him. It is a felony to re-enter the US illegally after deportation, punishable by up to 2 years in prison on the first offense,” he continued.

“A judge has since released him on bond,” he added.

From The Desert Sun:

Following the arrest, Perez resigned from her role as a deputy with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Perez, who was elected to her first term on the council last year, confirmed to KESQ that she witnessed and recorded her husband’s arrest. After initially agreeing to an interview with The Desert Sun, Perez did not respond to subsequent calls.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed Perez’s husband, Isidro Jimenez, was arrested Monday in Coachella, saying in a press release that it was assisted by FBI agents. The agency described Jimenez, 51, as a Mexican man with criminal convictions who illegally reentered the U.S. after his deportation in 1995.
