The Wisconsin judge who was arrested last month for hiding an illegal alien in her courtroom in order to help them avoid being deported by ICE has just been indicted by a federal grand jury.

Judge Hannah Dugan is facing charges related to concealing a person from arrest and obstruction a a U.S. agency.

Take a look:

Judge Hannah Dugan could face up to six years in prison and up to $350,000 in fines.

That should certainly send a message to any judges, mayors, or lawmakers who try to aid and abet illegal aliens…

Nobody is above the law, after all.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has more details on the indictment:

The two-page indictment accuses Dugan, 66, of obstructing a U.S. agency and concealing an individual to prevent an arrest. The two charges carry a maximum penalty of six years in prison and a $350,000 fine, but sentences in cases involving nonviolent offenses typically are much shorter.

Dugan is expected to enter a plea at a May 15 hearing. But members of her defense team issued this statement: “As she said after her unnecessary arrest, Judge Dugan asserts her innocence and looks forward to being vindicated in court.”

The indictment came after a string of witnesses entered the federal courthouse throughout the day on May 13 to testify before the grand jury.

Among those making appearances were Alan Freed Jr., Dugan’s court clerk, and Mercedes de la Rosa, who was the attorney for Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, the undocumented immigrant at the center of the case. De la Rosa has withdrawn from his case.

Also giving testimony was Milwaukee County Judge Kristela Cervera, a misdemeanor judge whose courtroom is next to Dugan’s. She arrived and left with defense attorney Michael F. Hart.

The New York Times added:

The indictment of the judge, Hannah C. Dugan of the Milwaukee County Circuit Court, was a routine but significant step in the Justice Department’s case against her. The Trump administration has defended the prosecution as a warning that no one is above the law, while many Democrats, lawyers and former judges have denounced it as an assault on the judiciary.

Judge Dugan, who has been temporarily removed from the bench by the Wisconsin Supreme Court while the case against her advances, has indicated through a lawyer that she intends to fight the charges. She is expected to appear in court on Thursday.

“Judge Hannah C. Dugan has committed herself to the rule of law and the principles of due process for her entire career as a lawyer and a judge,” her lawyers said in a statement shortly after she was arrested. They added on Tuesday that “Judge Dugan asserts her innocence and looks forward to being vindicated in court.”
