The widow of the late Democrat Robert F. Kennedy, Ethel Kennedy, has passed away at the age of 96 after suffering a stroke.

The Kennedy family announced her passing on Thursday. Joe Kennedy III, the United States’ special envoy for northern Ireland, took to social media to break the news about his grandmother.

“It is with our hearts full of love that we announce the passing of our amazing grandmother, Ethel Kennedy. She died this morning from complications related to a stroke suffered last week. Along with a lifetime’s work in social justice and human rights, our mother leaves behind nine children, 34 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom love her dearly,” Kennedy stated.

Ethel Kennedy’s life was filled with joy and tragedy, but mostly tragedy, as her husband, Robert F. Kennedy, was assassinated in 1968 as he campaigned for president. To add to the list of hardships, her own parents were killed in a 1955 plane crash, her brother died in a 1966 crash, her son David died of a drug overdose, and one of her other sons, Michael Kennedy, also died in a skiing accident.

Ethel founded the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organization in 1968 following his assassination.

Ethel raised 11 children, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who ran as an Independent presidential candidate this year before ultimately dropping out and endorsing former President Donald Trump as the best option for the country.

Her passing came at a time of ongoing family disagreement, as the Kennedy family boldly came out against RFK Jr.’s White House bid, opting to support Vice President Kamala Harris over their own relative, similar to Democrat VP nominee Tim Walz’s family members, who have voiced their support for Trump.

“You know, my family is at the center of the Democratic Party. I have members of my family that are working for the Biden administration. Biden has a bust of my father behind him at the Oval Office, and he’s been a family friend for many years,” RFK Jr. said in August, maturely explaining that there’s no hard feelings from his end.

“My family is – I understand that they’re troubled by my decisions. I love my family. I feel like we were raised in a milieu where we were encouraged to debate each other and debate ferociously and passionately about things and still love each other,” he continued. “They’re free to take their positions on these issues. There are many, many members of my family working at my campaign and who are supporting me.”

“I think we all need to be able to disagree with each other and still love each other,” he added.
