At least 36 people are dead after a destructive storm system swept across the central and eastern United States.

Multiple states witnessed powerful tornadoes, fierce wildfires, and a dust storm.

Per FOX Weather:

By the third day of the deadly storm system, FOX Weather confirmed 36 deaths caused by the combination of severe weather, tornadoes and dust storm-related crashes.

At least 24 people are confirmed dead in four states due to the tornado outbreak that was sweeping across the Midwest and into the Southeast on Friday and Saturday.

On Sunday, damage surveys continued across half a dozen states.

So far, the FOX Forecast Center has confirmed more than 30 tornadoes that touched down since Friday, including two in Arkansas with preliminary ratings of EF-4, one in Cave City, Arkansas, with a preliminary rating of EF-3 and winds of 165 mph. Another EF-3 tornado touched down in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. At least 10 EF-2 tornadoes were also confirmed.

Most of the destruction was found in southeastern Missouri, where officials confirmed at least a dozen deaths from severe weather and tornadoes. Six deaths were confirmed in Wayne County, three in Ozark County and two in Butler and Jefferson counties.

“We are actively monitoring the severe tornadoes and storms that have impacted many States across the South and Midwest — 36 innocent lives have been lost, and many more devastated,” President Trump said on Sunday.

“The National Guard have been deployed to Arkansas, and my Administration is ready to assist State and Local Officials, as they help their communities to try and recover from the damage. Please join Melania and me in praying for everyone impacted by these terrible storms!” he added.

Axios reports:

Fatalities occurred in Georgia, Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama from tornadoes that raced at highway speeds on Friday through Saturday night and into Sunday morning.

States of emergency were in effect due to storms in Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas, where President Trump said in a Sunday statement the National Guard had been deployed.

The storms had prompted the National Weather Service to issue a rare “high risk” threat designation for Mississippi and Alabama on Saturday, as multiple rounds of intense thunderstorms swept across these states.

Hard-hit communities include Taylorsville, Miss., and Calera, Ala., among many others, after tornadoes struck at night.

The storms even targeted at least one NWS office, with forecasters at NWS Birmingham forced to take shelter as a tornado passed close to their building Saturday evening.

The extreme storms have resulted in at least 12 deaths reported in Missouri, six in Mississippi and three each in Alabama and Arkansas.

Dust storms on Friday resulted in road crashes that killed at least eight people in Kansas and three others in Texas.
