In a turn of events, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has decided to highlight the “best of the best,” announcing that two Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers saved the life of a drowning 4-year-old boy in a hotel pool.
Off-duty ICE agents were dining at a restaurant in Plymouth, Minnesota, last week, when a “panicked woman” sought their help for a child who was unresponsive, showing no signs of life after drowning in a hotel swimming pool, the department said in a Wednesday press release.
The agents performed CPR for several minutes, with local police and Emergency Medical Services arriving approximately three minutes later to transport the boy to a local medical center.
“Thanks to this lifesaving care and quick action, the child regained consciousness and is now alert,” the DHS celebrated, adding that, “ICE received a written letter of recognition from the Plymouth Police Department, commending the agents for their heroic actions and professionalism during this terrifying incident.”
The letter noted that it took about 10 minutes of CPR once police arrived for the child to begin breathing on his own. It also explained that the boy had jumped into the pool to retrieve a toy.
“In a situation like this, the first few minutes of emergency aid and quality CPR are critical,” the letter read, emphasizing the importance of the immigration officers’ proximity in a scenario which otherwise “would have likely been tragic.”
“Much more than being in the right place at the right time, the ability to work effectively and efficiently in a chaotic and emotional scene is admirable,” the police department said.
“I want to take a moment to commend the heroism and swift action taken by these agents to save the life of a sweet, innocent child. If our agents had not been there and stepped up, this would have been a tragic outcome,” DHS Deputy Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis stated. “Because of their training, these two agents were able to save a life. Our agents are the best of the best.”
The department called for anyone who encounters an officer to thank them for their service, publicly highlighting the two heroic officers to reaffirm that President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stand with law enforcement, which “deserves honor, respect, and support for their service to our nation.”
Minnesota has faced national scrutiny since the beginning of “Operation Metro Surge,” which sent thousands of federal immigration agents to the state to arrest illegal immigrants and investigate fraud. Tensions rose after two incidents in which Minneapolis citizens obstructed and resisted law enforcement and were fatally shot.
Shortly after White House border czar Tom Homan announced that Minnesota’s local law enforcement had been cooperating with federal authorities, having also been deployed to the city, the Trump administration said that it would immediately end the operation. Many officers remain in the area, however, as ICE still has an office in the Twin Cities.
The DHS usually calls out the “worst of the worst” criminals who have been arrested and deported, emphasizing the importance of the Trump administration’s agenda of ridding American streets of offenders who don’t lawfully belong in the first place.
