A Democratic mayor in New Jersey was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated with her toddler in the car.

Lumberton Mayor Gina LaPlaca faces multiple charges, including driving under the influence, driving recklessly, and endangering a child.

“According to charging documents, a witness took video Monday of a driver unable to stay in their lane and nearly hitting a utility pole,” WPVI reports.

New Jersey Globe noted that LaPlaca has a history of legal issues.

LaPlaca was previously arrested in 2023 for allegedly assaulting her husband.

However, the charges against her were dropped.

WPVI reports:

Police located that vehicle at the Lumberton home of Mayor Gina LaPlaca around 6:00 p.m., where she allegedly admitted to officers that she had been drinking, and had recently picked up her two-year-old from day care.

Court documents also say an open container of alcohol was found in the car.

LaPlaca’s husband, Jason Carty, told Action News she’s now seeking treatment for addiction.

“Gina is someone who has struggled and is now getting that help that she needs. I ask that everyone keep her in their thoughts as she moves forward on her road to recovery,” said Carty.

“Gina’s a loving and caring mother and stepmother. Our oldest is a teenager and can see all the unkind things online,” said Carty. “I simply ask that you respect our privacy. Just be better humans and show some compassion.”

LaPlaca was elected to township committee in 2020 and re-elected in 2023.

She recently left her position as business administrator for Neptune Township for political reasons, according to her husband.

Per New Jersey Globe:

In 2023, while serving as deputy mayor, LaPlaca was arrested for assaulting her husband, Jason Carty, a controversial political activist. Carty was also arrested. He later accepted responsibility, and the charges against LaPlaca were dropped.

An incident report filed in 2017 revealed a verbal argument after “LaPlaca arrived home intoxicated,” police records show. Carty, then her boyfriend, left the house they shared with his young son voluntarily.

Carty told the New Jersey Globe in 2023 that he was “the bad guy in that incident.”

“I was the one at fault. We were both drinking,” Carty said. “While Gina was in college, she was the victim of domestic violence by her boyfriend. She is a domestic violence survivor.”

Carty had also reported a previous domestic violence incident involving LaPlaca, but he also disputes that.

“I never reported any domestic violence incidents. The police came to the house for an argument and no was charged and no allegations were made,” he said at the time. “I was the bad guy in that incident and I agreed to leave the house at the time.”

Earlier this month, LaPlaca was escorted out of a Mount Holly Fire Commission meeting after an outburst.
