Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) said he hasn’t heard back from El Salvador President Nayib Bukele after requesting a meeting about the detention of Kilmar Abrego Garcia.
“I write to urgently request a meeting with President Bukele during his current visit to the United States to discuss the illegal detention of my constituent, Kilmar Abrego Garcia,” Van Hollen wrote to Salvadoran Ambassador Milena Mayorga.

NBC News reports:
Democratic lawmakers led by Sen. Chris Van Hollen say they are willing to go to El Salvador to seek the release of a man who the Justice Department says it mistakenly deported there — a plan that has gained steam after the country’s president said during a visit to the White House that he would not send the man back to the U.S.
Van Hollen, D-Md., sent a letter Monday to El Salvador’s ambassador in the U.S. requesting a meeting with the country’s president, Nayib Bukele, who said in meeting with President Donald Trump later in the day that he “of course” would not send Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident, back to the U.S.
In a statement on Monday, Van Hollen said if Abrego Garcia was not in the U.S. by “midweek,” he would “travel to El Salvador this week to check on his condition and discuss his release.”
The idea gained support from several Democratic lawmakers, who said they would be willing to join Van Hollen on the trip.

Bukele told reporters during a meeting with President Trump that he would not return Garcia to the United States.
“How can I return him to the United States? Like if I smuggle him into the United States? Of course I’m not going to do it,” Bukele said.
“The question is preposterous. How can I smuggle a terrorist into the United States? I don’t have the power to return him to the United States,” he continued.

Per WUSA9:
The senator from Maryland said he wants to discuss Abrego Garcia’s return. If the man is not brought back, Van Hollen announced he would fly to El Salvador this week.
“Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia never should have been abducted and illegally deported, and the courts have made clear: the Administration must bring him home, now. However, since the Trump Administration appears to be ignoring these court mandates, we need to take additional action,” Van Hollen said. “That’s why I’ve requested to meet with President Bukele during his trip to the United States, and — if Kilmar is not home by midweek — I plan to travel to El Salvador this week to check on his condition and discuss his release.”
In a letter to Salvadoran Ambassador Milena Mayorga, Van Hollen asked for time with the country’s president while he is in D.C.
“I have met with Mr. Abrego Garcia’s wife, mother and brother and, as you can imagine, they are extremely worried about his health, safety, and continued illegal confinement, as am I,” Van Hollen wrote.
