While the Democrats have been harping on the Trump administration over cleaning up crime in Washington, D.C., a Democrat Governor has just issued a state of emergency over rampant crime.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Grisham has just issued a state of emergency for the city of Española.

Grisham’s decision to declare an emergency comes as the city’s crime rate has increased exponentially.

CBS News provided more insight into the state of emergency issued in New Mexico:

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared a state of emergency in the city of Española and nearby areas in response to what she calls “a significant surge” in violent crime and drug trafficking.

The governor’s order, which also covers the area of Rio Arriba County, Santa Clara and Ohkay Owingeh, authorizes $750,000 in emergency funding for the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management to provide resources to those communities, Grisham said in a news release on Wednesday.

Grisham cited police calls in Española and surrounding areas having more than doubled in the past two years, with police dispatches to businesses also quadrupling.

This is the second time this year Grisham has declared a state of emergency over crime in the state. In April, Grisham declared a state of emergency in Albuquerque, authorizing the deployment of about 70 New Mexico National Guard members to New Mexico’s largest city.

“When our local leaders called for help to protect their communities, we responded immediately with decisive action,” the Democratic governor said Wednesday. “We are making every resource available to support our local partners on the ground and restore public safety and stability to these areas that have been hardest hit by this crisis.”

AP reported this isn’t the first time Grisham has declared a state of emergency due to crime:

In April, Lujan Grisham declared a state of emergency in New Mexico’s largest city, Albuquerque, saying that a significant increase in crime warranted the help of the New Mexico National Guard. Earlier, in 2023, she suspended the right to carry guns at public parks and playgrounds in Albuquerque in response to a series of shootings around the state that left children dead.

There were no immediate calls for troop deployments in Rio Arriba County, though the new emergency declaration allows for authorities to call up the National Guard. Emergency funds will help local law enforcement agencies spend on overtime, equipment and coordinated police responses, said Lujan Grisham spokesperson Jodi McGinnis Porter.

The tribal governor of Santa Clara Pueblo on the edge of Española urged the state to address a growing public safety crisis stemming from the use and abuse of fentanyl and alcohol in the community at large.

“The pueblo has expended thousands of dollars trying to address this crisis … and to protect pueblo children who are directly and negatively affected by a parent’s or guardian’s addiction,” said Santa Clara Gov. James Naranjo in a July letter to Lujan Grisham. “But we are not an isolated community and the causes and effects of fentanyl/alcohol abuse, increased crime, and increased homelessness extend to the wider community.”
