The ongoing standoff between Harvard University and the Trump administration could potentially have 7,000 international students in limbo.

One of the students impacted is the daughter of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Cleo Carney just finished her freshman year at Harvard.

Carney may not be able to attend the university in the fall after the Trump administration moved to terminate the school’s student visa program for the 2025-2026 academic year.

In response, Harvard sued the administration for stripping its ability to enroll international students.

From the New York Post:

The younger Carney is following in her father’s footsteps, pursuing a bachelor’s in economics at the university. Mark Carney — who spent a number of years south of the 49th parallel but now talks tough about the US — is a Harvard grad.

Cleo is due to return in September for her second year of classes.

Foreign students like Carney — who make up more than a quarter of Harvard’s student body — could be forced to transfer to other institutions or lose their legal status after the university refused a request to turn over foreign students’ records, including any video or audio of their protest activity in the past five years.

Though a Massachusetts judge issued a preliminary injunction against the federal government Thursday, the saga is not over.

The White House confirmed Carney, along with other international students, would get the boot if the administration gets its way.

“Harvard sues the Trump administration, saying it has made 7,000 foreign students pawns in an unconstitutional bid to bludgeon the university over its First Amendment-protected viewpoints,” POLITICO reporter Kyle Cheney wrote.

POLITICO reports:

A federal judge on Thursday extended her block on the Trump administration’s bid to prevent Harvard University from enrolling foreign students.

U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs announced her plan during a court hearing shortly after the administration revealed that it would give the university a 30-day reprieve before canceling its authority to admit students from abroad.

That reprieve does not eliminate the need for a court order barring the administration from taking action against Harvard, Burroughs said.

“I know you don’t think an order is necessary, but I do think an order is necessary,” the judge told a government lawyer. ”I don’t think it needs to be draconian, but I want to make sure that nothing changes.”

The hearing took place in Burroughs’ Boston courtroom as Harvard’s annual commencement ceremonies were underway a few miles away in Cambridge’s Harvard Yard.

The case is the most prominent battle in a broader effort by the Trump administration to crack down on international students. On Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. plans to “aggressively revoke” visas for Chinese students at American universities.
