The FDA issued a recall for a ground coffee product on Wednesday based on potential health risk to consumers.
The FDA bulletin impacts 12 oz packages of ground coffee sold in 15 states.
A mishap in labeling allowed ground coffee to be packaged and labeled as decaffeinated, but the batch in question never underwent the decaffeination process.
My initial reaction was something like… why are they recalling GOOD COFFEE!?
Like this X user, I want my coffee as caffeinated as possible!
Class II Recall for Coffee Across 15 States, Caffeine Content Too High. It is impossible for caffeine content to be too high… lol https://t.co/oxGpjojxh0

But considering some medications and health conditions could become deadly simply by increasing blood pressure, heart rate, or a number of other factors that can change from drinking fully caffeinated coffee — this could be a serious problem for plenty of people.
The full FDA recall notice can be found here: 15-State Coffee Recall
And the following is a screenshot from Our Family Foods website which features the UPC code of the impacted product, as well as “Use By” date which can be used to identify the specific lot of product in question:
The “Best Before” code on the packaging should read “BEST BEFORE 080325 V 15:37 C” on coffee that is being recalled, according to the FDA website.
It covers thousands of pounds of ground coffee distributed to 15 states in 12oz packages labeled “Traverse City Cherry Artificially Flavored Decaf Light Roast Ground Coffee”, also according to the FDA notice.
The U.S. States included in the recall are as follows: Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota and North Carolina, in addition to North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming, according to Fox Business:
Thousands of packages of ground coffee sold in 15 states are being recalled due to a mislabeling error, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The recall, which affects 692 cases of Our Family Foods ground coffee bags, was initiated on March 13. The FDA classified the incident as a Class II recall on Monday.
In total, 4,152 12-ounce packages of Our Family Traverse City Cherry Decaffeinated Ground Coffee are included in the recall.
According to the FDA bulletin, the coffee may not have been decaffeinated at all, posing a risk to consumers seeking to avoid caffeine.
The recall only impacts products labeled “BEST BEFORE 080325 V 15:37 C,” according to the FDA page. The bags also had a UPC code of 0 70253 11080 1.
Class II recalls involve products that “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
The ground coffee was sold in Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota and North Carolina, in addition to North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
Surprisingly, it is not uncommon for coffee products to make the FDA’s recall list.
Last year a nationwide recall on a canned coffee product:
And just last week 75,000 bottles of a popular coffee creamer was recalled due to “spoilage” issues:
Though the FDA notice did not identify which outlets SOLD the specific product, the current recall was upgraded to a Class II recall on Monday.
The FDA defines a Class II recall as a scenario in which “exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote”, according to a report in the New York Post:
Thousands of pounds of coffee have been recalled across 15 states after bags of ground java were incorrectly labeled as “decaf.”
The Food and Drug Administration declared the recall a Class II on Monday, calling to withdraw 692 cases of 12 oz bags of Our Family Foods City Cherry Decaf Coffee.
The FDA defines a class II recall as “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
Customers may return the item to the store for a refund or replacement.
“We are committed to your health and safety, and we follow best practices to ensure the quality and safety of the products we sell. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused,” Our Family Foods website states.
After a bit of research, I was able to discover that the distributor of the product in question is a Michigan based company.
Ironically, I had to search out a Tennessee-based news outlet for that information.
Thank God for the internet!

The SpartanNash Company distributed 4,152 of the 12 oz packages of mislabeled coffee across 15 states prior to the recall, according to a report in The Tennessean:
More than 4,000 packages of ground coffee sold in 15 states are being recalled due to a labeling error.
The recall, which includes 692 cases of Our Family Foods 12 oz. ground coffee bags, was initiated on March 13, according to a notice on the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) website. On Monday, the incident was classified as a Class II recall.
Class II recalls include products that “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote,” according to the FDA.
Distributor SpartanNash said in an email to USA TODAY Friday that the company’s “top priority is the safety of our consumers.”
“We issued the recall on March 13 immediately after being notified by our supplier that the product had been mislabeled,” the statement said. “All recalled product was already removed from store shelves and destroyed prior to the FDA’s classification of the recall earlier this week.”
The impacted coffee was distributed by The SpartanNash Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan. In total, 4,152, 12-ounce packages were recalled.
While it might be easy to poke fun at the “unnecessary” recall and destruction of what many consider to be perfectly good coffee…
The fact is, for many people, drinking caffeinated coffee could prove life threatening.
On the other hand, I have a mailing address I’m ready to give out if anyone with Our Family Foods wants to reach out.
If it would prove cheaper to have stores dropship their product to me in Texas, rather than shipping all that coffee back to Minnesota, I would gladly take on the burden of all that CAFFEINNATED coffee!
My heart would ONLY become more happy from all that caffeinated bean juice.
Of course, it is more likely that stores will receive a “destroy at store” order, which would technically make it illegal and unethical for them to use or give the product away.
With global coffee prices soaring over the past few years — along with eggs and everything else hit by Biden-era inflation — those 4,152 packages of 12oz coffee bags now sell for $19.95 on Walmart.com!
That’s a gross selling point of almost $83K!
Maybe someone should alert Elon Musk so he can make a deal with Our Family Foods for some *discounted* CAFFEINATED coffee to keep DOGE working those long shifts!
There are probably all types of laws against that, and nearly $83,000 in perfectly good coffee will be destroyed — which hurts my coffee-loving heart.
But the important thing is it won’t hurt anyone else’s heart, or interact with anyone’s daily meds.
Nevertheless…
To Whom It Concerns @ Our Family Coffee — I’m in Texas, and I’ll gladly supply an address in the name of saving the coffee.
