After neither candidate in the Texas U.S. Senate race secured more than 50% of the vote needed to win their party’s nomination, Texas Senator John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton will advance to a May runoff.
On May 26th, the two Republicans will go head to head once again in a runoff to determine who will represent the GOP in the November midterms.
The third candidate in the race, U.S. Representative Wesley Hunt (R-Texas), received 18% of the vote. With Hunt no longer in the race, his supporters will likely become the kingmakers as both remaining candidates scramble to surpass the 50% threshold in the second round.
Cornyn (R-Texas), the incumbent, is seeking his fifth term in the position, having been first elected to represent the Lone Star State in 2002. He maintains the firm support of Senate Republican leadership.
An internal polling memo released by the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), described Cornyn as “the only Republican candidate who reliably wins a general election matchup,” warning that Texas “cannot afford to be a gamble” in the high-stakes midterms.
Historically, no Republican senator in Texas has ever failed to win renomination—a streak Cornyn is fighting to preserve.
Paxton, the three-term state attorney general, has leveraged a long record of endorsing the president. Since launching his Senate run in April 2025, he has been very vocal about his years of funding with Cornyn, frequently linking the senator to the “D.C. establishment.”
The primary battle has been incredibly expensive, with over $88 million already spent.
President Donald Trump has so far opted not to endorse a candidate in the heated primary, instead acknowledging it as an “interesting election,” during a Friday visit to Corpus Christi, Texas.
While the president referred to the candidates as “both great people,” he teased reporters by saying he has “pretty much” decided on an endorsement but refused to reveal his choice.
Trump’s eventual pick could prove decisive in the upcoming runoff.
