The U.S. and China have escalated their trade war by raising tariffs against each other despite President Donald Trump pausing tariffs on other countries.
Currently, Trump’s tariffs on China total 145%, according to the Associated Press.
“The U.S.’ arbitrary imposition of abnormally high tariffs on China seriously violates international economic and trade rules, disregards the post-World War II global economic order built by the U.S. itself, and violates basic economic laws and common sense,” a statement put out by China’s Commerce Ministry announcing the tariffs said.
The statement by China called rising U.S. tariffs “a joke” and said it would not respond to future U.S. tariff hikes.
“If the U.S. continues to impose higher tariffs, it will no longer make economic sense and will become a joke in the history of world economy,” China’s statement said. “At the current tariff level, there is no market acceptance for U.S. goods exported to China. If the U.S. continues to play the tariff numbers game, China will ignore it. However, if the U.S. insists on continuing to substantially infringe on China’s interests, China will resolutely counterattack and fight to the end.”
The latest rise in tariffs comes after Trump paused higher levy’s on other countries for 90 days, leaving a 10% baseline import tax in place.
He then hit China with an additional 125% tariff on Wednesday, exempting the communist nation from the pause due to “a lack of respect.”
The White House then later confirmed that China was facing a total 145% tariff, on top of an earlier 20% levy.
“There are no winners in a tariff war and going against the world will only result in self-isolation,” Xi Jinping, China’s top leader, said on Friday, speaking publicly on the matter for the first time.
Meanwhile, China said it was filing another lawsuit with the World Trade Organization opposing Trump’s tariffs.
