“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” a statement from Keaton’s family given to PEOPLE read.

PEOPLE shared more:

Keaton’s family went on to share the causes she was passionate about: “She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.”

PEOPLE first reported on Saturday, Oct. 11, that the Oscar-winning actress had died in California at the age of 79. “There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness,” a spokesperson said at the time.

A source told PEOPLE Oct. 11 that Keaton’s health “declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her.” Her death “was so unexpected,” added the source, “especially for someone with such strength and spirit.”

“In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private. Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening,” said the source.

Grammy and Oscar-winning songwriter Carole Bayer Sager, one of Keaton’s friends, said Keaton “lost so much weight” before her passing, the New York Post noted.

“I saw her two or three weeks ago, and she was very thin. I was kind of stunned by how much weight she’d lost,” Sager said, according to the outlet.

The New York Post provided further info:

Meanwhile, one of Keaton’s film executive friends told the outlet that Keaton “was funny right up until the end.”

“She lived exactly how she wanted to, which was on her own terms, surrounded by the people and things she really loved,” the pal stated, adding that Keaton “kept a close circle and she liked it that way” in the final few years of her life.

Keaton, whose career spanned more than half a century, died Saturday, Oct. 11, in California, her family confirmed.

The “Father of the Bride” actress never disclosed if she was battling any illness. She previously survived two bouts with skin cancer and an eating disorder.

She last posted to her Instagram on April 11, sharing a photo with her Golden Retriever, Reggie. She had not been seen publicly in six months.
