President Trump signed an executive order authorizing the Pentagon to deploy active duty U.S. troops to help secure the Southern Border.

Approximately 1,500 troops will be deployed in the coming days.

“No later than 10 days from the effective date of this order, deliver to the President a revision to the Unified Command Plan that assigns United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) the mission to seal the borders and maintain the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security of the United States by repelling forms of invasion including unlawful mass migration, narcotics trafficking, human smuggling and trafficking, and other criminal activities,” the executive order reads.

From the Associated Press:

Acting Defense Secretary Robert Salesses was expected to sign the deployment orders on Wednesday, but it wasn’t yet clear which troops or units will go, and the total could fluctuate. It remains to be seen if they will end up doing law enforcement, which would put American troops in a dramatic new role, not done in recent history.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement has not yet been made.

The active duty forces would join the roughly 2,500 U.S. National Guard and Reserve forces already there. There are currently no active duty troops working along the border.

The troops are expected to be used to support border patrol agents, with logistics, transportation and construction of barriers. They have done similar duties in the past, when both Trump and former President Joe Biden sent active duty troops to the border.

“Threats against our Nation’s sovereignty continue today, and it is essential that the Armed Forces staunchly continue to participate in the defense of our territorial integrity and sovereignty.  A National Emergency currently exists along the southern border of the United States.  Unchecked unlawful mass migration and the unimpeded flow of opiates across our borders continue to endanger the safety and security of the American people and encourage further lawlessness,” the order read.

“Accordingly, through this order, I am acting in accordance with my solemn duty to protect and defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the United States along our national borders,” it added.

The Hill reports:

The Pentagon said in a statement that it was “fully committed to carrying out the orders from our Commander-In-Chief, and is doing so immediately under his leadership.”

Trump is requesting a revised mission plan from NORTHCOM within 10 days and that his secretary of Defense receive a level 3 planning requirement, or a detailed plan, within 30 days. And he has ordered a steady planning requirement to maintain border operations.

The executive order does not establish how many or which types of troops would be deployed, whether active-duty, reserve or National Guard. Trump had pledged on the campaign trail to deploy active-duty troops.

Trump deployed active-duty troops to the border in his first term, and the previous Biden administration did as well, but both were in response to specific instances.
