A judge is pushing the Trump Administration to dismantle a security feature protecting federal agents at an ICE facility in Illinois.
And the deadline is TONIGHT.
Would it surprise you if I mentioned Judge LaShonda Hunt received her federal appointment to the bench in Illinois from Joe Biden?
(Or, at least… from whoever was making decisions for Biden on that particular day.)
Judge LaShonda originally wanted the fence surrounding the Boardview federal ICE facility removed LAST week.
But since those timeframes have come and gone, and since the Trump Administration has shown no signs that they intend to comply with her edict…
LaShonda set a deadline that expires at 11:59 P.M. tonight — Tuesday night.
But I want to back up slightly, to a point just two weeks prior, before we get into that.
That’s when the Trump Administration responded to a letter sent from Broadview’s Mayor calling on ICE to end it’s ‘siege’ in the city — a suburb of Chicago.
The Acting Ice Director replied with a letter of his own, clarifying that the only ‘siege’ in Broadway was the one being carried out by antagonists against the United States government.
Keep in mind the public facing rhetoric Mayor Thompson was putting forward, describing ICE — and not the violence stemming from protesters targeting federal Agents — as lawless.
Here’s a short clip from an appearance she made on CNN making those claims against ICE… just one week ago:
BREAKING: The Mayor of Broadview, Illinois, claims ICE agents are “inciting violence and committing CRIMES”
“ICE is the one who has been instigating all the problems against our residents. They did not respect our local laws. They’re causing problems and committing crimes.” pic.twitter.com/7qsvgWbgiM

Mayor Thompson’s stance against ICE, along with her antagonizing letter, set the stage for this most recent showdown over the security fence.
Here’s the letter in which ICE Director Todd Lyons threw down the gauntlet in response, proclaiming there would be ‘no change in our operational posture’ until the lawlessness is brought to heel:
Acting ICE Director Lyons’ response to Broadview Mayor Thompson’s letter:
“You can either continue to be part of the problem or choose to be part of the solution by directing your police to enforce local ordinances and working with us to remove violent offenders.”

Here’s the full text of that full-throated refusal to back down from the ICE Director to Mayor Thompson, as shared on the official government website of ICE:
Dear Mayor Thompson:
Thank you for your September 26, 2025, letter. The safety and protection of our officers,
staff, and those in our custody remain our top priority. Unfortunately, the Broadview Processing Center continues to face violence and unlawful activity by rioters. The relentless actions of these individuals-and their attempts to obstruct the enforcement of federal law-are unacceptable. As you know, these events come just days after the armed attack on an ICE facility in Dallas, where officers were targeted simply for carrying out their duties. Against that backdrop, chants of “shoot ICE” and physical attempts to breach the Broadview facility cannot be dismissed as peaceful protest. They are direct threats to the lives of federal personnel and to public safety.
We have repeatedly requested assistance from state and local law enforcement, including
your own police department, to disperse these unlawful assemblies. Instead, local inaction has enabled agitators to escalate violence and placed federal officers, first responders, and Broadview residents in harm’s way. If our officers were provided the support they need, the crowd control measures referenced in your letter would not be necessary. These rioters are laying siege and interfering with legitimate law enforcement operations.
Failure to help provide relief makes you a party to the obstruction of justice. There will be no
change in our operational posture until these unlawful activities cease. The only siege in
Broadview is the one being waged against the United States government. You can either
continue to be part of the problem or choose to be part of the solution by directing your police to enforce local ordinances and working with us to remove violent offenders.Should you wish to change course, please do not hesitate to contact [email protected].
Sincerely,
Todd Lyons
Acting Director
Following that confrontational letter exchange, the fight started to focus more specifically on the protective barrier surrounding the facility.
After all… why not REMOVE one of the primary restraints keeping the violence from exploding even further?
You’d think that’s what some of these local Democratic Party leaders WANTED to happen… if that didn’t sound absolutely crazy.
ICE erected the fence just three weeks ago after the location repeatedly became the focal point of dangerous demonstrations and arrests.
Judge LaShonda has ordered the fence removed, even while state authorities are erecting ADDITIONAL barriers.
Ironically, those additional barriers being put up by the Illinois Department of Transportation are specifically intended to protect PROTESTERS — not the ICE facility being routinely targeted — as reported by the local CBS news affiliate out of Chicago:
A deadline looms Tuesday for the removal of a fence surrounding the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in west suburban Broadview.
A judge ordered that the riot fence must come down by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday. But new barriers went up on Monday, and they are drawing criticism too.
Last month, hours after the fencing went up at the facility, a letter went out from the Broadview Fire Department to Homeland Security saying, in part, it was “built, without a permit, a fence on a public street under the jurisdiction of the village of Broadview … currently blocking Broadview Fire Department access to that road.”
Some who live in the area say they fence has limited access and visibility for families who are trying to reach loved ones inside. Others say it is just one more obstacle in an already disruptive situation.
On Monday, Illinois Department of Transportation crews installed new concrete barriers outside facility, adding another layer to what many already call a “fortress.”
Mayor Thompson said the barriers are meant to keep protesters safe and protect residents when demonstrations spill into the street.
For those who prefer a video news report, here’s a quick summary of the situation from Fox News.
This includes some crazy footage of Illinois lawmakers, including the Speaker of Illinois House, attempting to mimic Ronald Reagan in calling for President Trump to “TEAR DOWN THIS FENCE!”:
JUST IN: Illinois U.S. District Court Judge LaShonda Hunt (Biden appointed ) has ruled that the fencing surrounding the ICE facility in Broadview must be torn down.

As that report mentioned, the alternative to the security fence put forward by Broadview officials is a simplified front gate, to be manned by local authorities.
You know — the same guys that the ICE Director claimed he has called upon for help multiple times… in vain?
It should come as no surprise that both Mayor Thompson and the city’s lawyer lauded Judge LaShonda’s order to remove the fence.
Mayor Thompson essentially dared ICE to defy the judge’s order in her response, covered by the local Fox News affiliate in Chicago:
The fence, built on Sept. 23, was intended to protect the ICE facility during protests that have at times turned tense, with occasional clashes between demonstrators and federal agents.
Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson called the ruling “a validation of local law and, most importantly, a decisive win for public safety.”
“The judge’s decision confirms that the illegal fence constructed by ICE is not only a clear defiance of Broadview’s ordinance but an unacceptable and escalating risk to our Beach Street businesses, their customers, and our first responders,” Thompson said in a statement. “Now, it remains to be seen if ICE will respect the judge’s order and dismantle this hazard immediately, or if they will continue their pattern of defiance.”
Village of Broadview General Counsel Michael Del Galdo also released a statement.
“The court ruled that this unauthorized ICE fence in Broadview had to go, plain and simple. Its construction on the Village’s land was causing harm because it was actively blocking Broadview Fire Department from doing its jobs—specifically, protecting the public’s health, safety, and welfare. When you weigh the stakes, the decision was clear: the Village must have unrestricted access to its own property to enforce its powers, and, most importantly, the public interest demands that government agencies – even the federal government – follow the law, not break it.”
The Broadview processing center has been a flashpoint for protesters since President Donald Trump ramped up immigration enforcement in the Chicago area in recent weeks. (Emphasis added.)
As Broadway’s Mayor said, it remains to be seen whether or not ICE will comply with Judge LaShonda’s order — or the deadline.
As I write, we sit less than 6 hours away from the expiration of that deadline.
There has so far been no indication from ICE that they are removing the existing protective fence, or even preparing to do so.
In chess, I’d call that letting the state of tension ride.
And we’ll be sure to bring you the updates to this continuing story as it develops.
