Recent polling data coming from AP-NORC shows that 81% of Americans view crime as a major issue in U.S. cities, and 53% approve of President Donald Trump’s approach to addressing it, including his deployment of the National Guard to Washington, D.C.
New polling data from the AP-NORC revealed that 96% of Republicans believe that crime in large cities is a “major issue,” along with 68% of Democrats and 72% of independents. Altogether, 81% of respondents agree that crime represents a major issue in the nation’s largest cities.
The poll also asked whether respondents consider it acceptable for the U.S. military and National Guard to assist local police — a policy President Trump has implemented in Washington, D.C., and plans to extend to other major cities like Chicago.

55% of respondents supported the initiative while 37% opposed, and the remaining 7% marked that they did not “know enough” to make a determination.
Adding further context, 82% of Republicans support U.S. Military and National Guard intervention, in contrast with 63% of Democrat respondents who oppose the policy.
Furthermore, 53% of all respondents approve of President Trump’s handling of crime, bolstered by 88% support from Republicans and 46% support from Independents.
The poll included responses from 1,182 American adults, and it was conducted between August 21st and 25th, weeks after the Trump administration implemented the federalization of the Metropolitan Police Force in Washington, D.C.
As of Wednesday, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi revealed that the operation in D.C. has, so far, resulted in 1,178 arrests — along with the seizure of 123 illegal guns.
President Trump has also boasted about the jurisdiction going a whole 12 days without a single homicide, as the nation’s capital previously held higher murder rates than Bogota, Colombia, and Mexico City, according to the president, who cited data from 2023.
Additionally, Trump has repeatedly highlighted Chicago’s crime rate, advocating for the federalization of the Illinois National Guard if city and state officials continue to refrain from taking action.
“A really DEADLY weekend in Chicago. 6 DEAD, 27 HURT IN CRIME SPREES ALLOVER THE CITY. Panic stricken Governor [JB] Pritzker says that crime is under control, when in fact it is just the opposite. He is an incompetent Governor who should call me for HELP. Mayor Johnson is no better. Make Chicago Great Again!” Trump wrote on Tuesday. “CRIME NUMBERS ARE WAY DOWN IN DC! AMAZING PROGRESS BEING MADE! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
