Whoopi Goldberg was hoping for one short day when it came to βWickedβ talk.
On Tuesdayβs episode of βThe View,β the 69-year-old pretended to sleep as the group discussed aΒ βWickedβΒ meme involving starsΒ Ariana GrandeΒ andΒ Cynthia Erivo.
Goldberg placed her chin firmly into her palm after introducing the viral interview moment during the Hot Topics segment.
Tracy Gilchrist for Out magazineΒ told Erivo and GrandeΒ that fans of the project βare holding spaceβ with the lyrics of βDefying Gravity,β which sparked an emotional reaction from Erivo, 37, during their press tour.
βI didnβt know that was happening. Thatβs really powerful,β the actress said, as Grande, 31, reached over and clutched her co-starβs index finger.
βApparently, this has struck a cord with people. Why? I donβt know,β Goldberg said during the ABC program.
Cohosts Sunny HostinΒ andΒ Alyssa Farah GriffinΒ then channeled their inner Erivo and Grande, recreating the finger embrace while the audience laughed.
βWhat does holding space mean?βΒ Joy BeharΒ eventually questioned, to which Hostin, 56, explained itβs the βpractice of making space for somebody elseβs experience and centering themβ that βfosters listening and empathizing,β perΒ Psychology Today.
βAm I supposed to hold space for Trump supporters now?β Behar, 82, teased. Meanwhile, Griffin, 35, noted how βperfectly unhinged the whole press tour isβ forΒ βWicked.β
Behar then pointed to Goldberg nodding off at the head of the table, and stated, βWhoopi took a nap throughout this entire segment.β
Added Hostin: βSheβs holding space for her self-care!β
Goldberg then woke up from her deep sleep, looked around, smiled and sent the show to a commercial break.
Gilchrist has since been mocked by the internetΒ for creating the completely nonsensical phrase, but told VarietyΒ on Monday that the interview was conducted a day and a half after the Nov. 5Β presidential election, and that she went into the sit-down with βsincereβ intentions.
The journalist also explained her personal definition for βholding space.β
βI was very inspired by Tony Morrison, [senior communications director] from GLAAD,β she told the outlet. βHe posted the lyrics of βDefying Gravityβ before I did my interview. It was a great explainer. βHolding spaceβ is being physically, emotionally and mentally present with someone or something. For me, it means being in the moment, not being distracted and feeling something on a cellular level.β
βI think you can hold space with lyrics of a song β one youβve heard hundreds of times β and it can suddenly take on new meaning when youβre a queer person,β Gilchrist continued.
βThe Trump administrationΒ is targeting LGBTQ+ people via Project 2025. When Cynthia sings βIβm through accepting limits,β thereβs power in that. She plays a character who is othered. One who comes to her full power when she is exiled by a charlatan, by a cruel leader.β
The media personality concluded, βThereβs a lot of resonance there right now for anyone who is marginalized. For me, holding space is listening to those lyrics anew and finding solace or inspiration.β
