A look into the 31st SAG Awards has been unveiled!
The Post got a sneak peek at what guests will enjoy during the ceremony at the Screen Actors Guild Awards’ Media Preview at The Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall on Thursday.
This year’s awards are dubbed a “Love Letter to Los Angeles” following the deadly wildfires last month — a sentiment that SAG Awards Executive Producer Jon Brockett holds close to his heart.
“I’m a longtime Angelino resident and I think we all struggled, whether you were directly impacted by the fires or not, you struggled with the emotion of it. It was really emotional for us to see our fellow residents hurting,” he told The Post. “I realized that even after living here for twenty years, how much I love this city. And I didn’t know that before. I’ve had a rollercoaster with L.A. I think a lot of people have. But I truly felt this emotional connection to the city that I had not felt before.”
Brockett explained what caused that feeling, crediting “not only the events themselves but how residents rallied and came in support of each other.”
“I realized there is so much good here so that helped reshape our thinking about the show and this kind of love letter to L.A. came to us and how we can show the city off in a really beautiful way through community, through resilience, through it’s determination.”
Sofia Carson, one of this year’s SAG Awards Ambassadors, echoed Brockett’s sentiments, explaining what her role is within SAG-AFTRA.
“Being a SAG Ambassador is such a beautiful honor,” the actress expressed. “We are the representatives of the SAG-AFTRA foundation at the SAG Awards to shed light onto the work that the foundation is doing, which is now more pivotal than ever as our city has been aching from these devastating wildfires.”
Carson, 31, added, “Our show on Sunday will be dedicated to each and every single member of our community that has been effected and it’s beautiful for all of us to be coming together to lift our city and do what we do best.”
Viewers can expect a night of laughs as well, as Kristen Bell is back to host the show, which will stream live globally on Netflix, Sunday, Feb. 23, 2025 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
The “Nobody Wants This” star hosted the show in 2018. Since then, there hasn’t been a single host on the shows.
“2018, she was a dream to work with. She was gracious and kind and funny and totally perfect for the show,” Brockett gushed. “And then there are some years where we don’t have a host because it’s a tight two hours. This year just felt really right.”
“I honestly just can’t get enough of her,” the exec admitted. “And I can’t wait to see what she does on Sunday.”
Both Bell and her “Nobody Wants This” co-star Adam Brody are nominated for their work in the Netflix rom-com series.
Jane Fonda, 87, is set to receive this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
According to Brockett, the legendary actress and philanthropist is the perfect fit.
“I think she really embodies the award in a way that represents SAG-AFTRA,” he stated. “She’s a trailblazer, she’s an advocate for those that don’t have a voice, and she’s also a phenomenal actor.”
Between the awards and accolades, Fonda and her peers are also in for a night of incredible food.
Michelin-starred Chef David Chang unveiled his menu for the SAG Awards on Sunday, explaining what Hollywood’s A-listers will be eating during the coveted event.
“The menu is a little bit different because we’re in a location that doesn’t always allow cooking, so we’re limited by what we can actually cook and execute,” Chang explained. “Also the sort of mandate was let’s make this fun, fresh, a little bit different.”
As for what that looks like? As the executive chef, 47, put it: “So, the cocktail hour will be our version of a slider with honey butter chips. The main course is going to be pulled fried chicken with kimbap, which is a Korean dish, so I think people will understand it pretty easily, it’s basically just a rice roll.”
The nominees and guests can also expect a delicious finale with a bit of a twist.
“Then the last course,” Chang continued, “[I] teamed up with my good friend, Chef Chris Bianco. He has a restaurant down at the ROW… he makes the best pizza in the world.”
He added, “He made a pizza specifically for Sunday, and we’re pairing that with something special that will be unveiled” at the show.
Chang also shared his motto for Sunday.
“Keep my head down, work with the team and let’s just get the food out,” he said. “That’s my main concern.”
But, of course, the chef has seen FX’s “The Bear,” which was nominated for four SAG awards on Sunday and couldn’t help but gush over the realism of the cooking drama.
“Chris Storer, the creator and producer of the show, he’s really into food and he has plenty of friends – a lot of my friends worked on the show – I know it’s very accurate,” Chang revealed. “It’s definitely the most accurate TV show or movie that’s ever been made, and it’s popular for good reason.”
