Savannah Guthrie is breaking in her new voice.

The β€œToday” anchor, 54, was overcome with emotion after hearing herself talk for the first time following vocal cord surgery in December.

On Friday, Guthrie shared a segment on the morning show, where she documented her journey with her voice.

β€œNo longer able to just ignore it,” she said in the footage after showing clips of her on-air voice declining.

After seeing a vocal specialist, it was determined Guthrie had a ruptured blood vessel on one cord and on the other vocal cord, a callous from overuse.

The anchor had what she called β€œbeleaguered vocal cords.”

Guthrie’s surgery took an hour and following the procedure she was forced to be silent for eight days.

The journalist then had a post-op visit with her team of doctors to unveil her new vocal cords.

β€œSay what you say every morning,” the physician began while examining Guthrie.

She replied: β€œGood morning. Today is Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026. I am using my voice for the first time and it sounds good. I could cry.”

Guthrie was overcome with emotion, wiping away tears before footage cut to her in voice therapy.

β€œI’m so grateful to all of you at this place and my bosses at NBC, who have been nothing but supportive. To take three weeks off is a big, big deal,” she said while on β€œToday” on Friday. β€œI’m so grateful to be back, and I’m ready to go.”

On Tuesday, Guthrie called into the television show’s broadcast for the first time since stepping away.

She reunited with fellow co-hosts Craig Melvin, Jenna Bush Hager, Carson Daly, Al Roker and Sheinelle Jones, holding up a dry-erase board that read β€œLove you.”

Then, Guthrie surprised fans by saying to the camera: β€œYou know what? I think it’d be easier for me to just talk.”

β€œI am still on vocal rest, but I’m allowed to talk for five to 10 minutes every hour,” the journalist explained.

β€œSavannah sounds good,” Jones, 47, chimed in, to which Guthrie joked back, β€œThis is my new voice, or my old voice but my new voice.”

β€œSounds the same,” Roker, 71, added. However, Melvin, 46, disagreed, adding: β€œNo, you sound markedly better!”

β€œI think the good news is that it worked,” Guthrie answered. β€œAnd Sheinelle knows, she went through this and had this surgery, it’s kind of slow recovery. You’re allowed to talk and if you talk too much β€” which is a real risk for me β€” you start to feel it, so you just have to take it easy.”

Daly, 52, asked Guthrie if she’d taken the new cords for a β€œtest drive” to yell at her and husband Michael Feldman’s two kids: Vale, 11, and Charley, 9, yet.

β€œActually, yes,” Guthrie clapped back. β€œA long weekend will bring that out, especially when Mike had to travel. It finally got there.”

In December, Guthrie announcedΒ she would be temporarily leaving the talk showΒ to undergo vocal surgery.

β€œSome of you have noticed that my voice has been very scratchy and started to crack a little bit,” she began while on air. β€œWell, I have found out what it is. I have vocal nodules, and I also have a polyp. It’s not a big, big deal, but I am going to have to have a surgery in the new year and be off for a couple of weeks, so this is my last day for a little while.”

Guthrie added: β€œThis has been going on for years, honestly, so to have a solution.”

She elaborated that viewers even began to suspect that she was having β€œthe world’s longest head cold.”

However, she’s β€œreally excited” to have gotten to the root of the problem.

β€œTotally silent,” she stated about the recovery process. β€œChristmas coming early for my family!”
