Savannah Guthrie is breaking in her new voice.
The βTodayβ anchor, 54, was overcome with emotion after hearing herself talk for the first time following vocal cord surgery in December.
On Friday, Guthrie shared a segment on the morning show, where she documented her journey with her voice.
βNo longer able to just ignore it,β she said in the footage after showing clips of her on-air voice declining.
After seeing a vocal specialist, it was determined Guthrie had a ruptured blood vessel on one cord and on the other vocal cord, a callous from overuse.
The anchor had what she called βbeleaguered vocal cords.β
Guthrieβs surgery took an hour and following the procedure she was forced to be silent for eight days.
The journalist then had a post-op visit with her team of doctors to unveil her new vocal cords.
βSay what you say every morning,β the physician began while examining Guthrie.
She replied: βGood morning. Today is Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026. I am using my voice for the first time and it sounds good. I could cry.β
Guthrie was overcome with emotion, wiping away tears before footage cut to her in voice therapy.
βIβm so grateful to all of you at this place and my bosses at NBC, who have been nothing but supportive. To take three weeks off is a big, big deal,β she said while on βTodayβ on Friday. βIβm so grateful to be back, and Iβm ready to go.β
On Tuesday, Guthrie called into the television showβs broadcast for the first time since stepping away.
She reunited with fellow co-hosts Craig Melvin, Jenna Bush Hager, Carson Daly, Al Roker and Sheinelle Jones, holding up a dry-erase board that read βLove you.β
Then, Guthrie surprised fans by saying to the camera: βYou know what? I think itβd be easier for me to just talk.β
βI am still on vocal rest, but Iβm allowed to talk for five to 10 minutes every hour,β the journalist explained.
βSavannah sounds good,β Jones, 47, chimed in, to which Guthrie joked back, βThis is my new voice, or my old voice but my new voice.βΒ
βSounds the same,β Roker, 71, added. However, Melvin, 46, disagreed, adding: βNo, you sound markedly better!β
βI think the good news is that it worked,β Guthrie answered. βAnd Sheinelle knows, she went through this and had this surgery, itβs kind of slow recovery. Youβre allowed to talk and if you talk too much β which is a real risk for me β you start to feel it, so you just have to take it easy.β
Daly, 52, asked Guthrie if sheβd taken the new cords for a βtest driveβ to yell at her and husband Michael Feldmanβs two kids: Vale, 11, and Charley, 9, yet.
βActually, yes,β Guthrie clapped back. βA long weekend will bring that out, especially when Mike had to travel. It finally got there.β
The television personality is set to officially return toΒ βTodayβΒ on Monday, Jan. 26.
In December, Guthrie announcedΒ she would be temporarily leaving the talk showΒ to undergo vocal surgery.
βSome of you have noticed that my voice has been very scratchy and started to crack a little bit,β she began while on air. βWell, I have found out what it is. I have vocal nodules, and I also have a polyp. Itβs not a big, big deal, but I am going to have to have a surgery in the new year and be off for a couple of weeks, so this is my last day for a little while.β
Guthrie added: βThis has been going on for years, honestly, so to have a solution.β
She elaborated that viewers even began to suspect that she was having βthe worldβs longest head cold.β
However, sheβs βreally excitedβ to have gotten to the root of the problem.
βTotally silent,β she stated about the recovery process. βChristmas coming early for my family!β
