Tina Fey does her research.
The actress, 54, chatted with Jon Hamm for an Interview magazine story published Monday and they reminisced on Hamm, 54, landing a role in “30 Rock” after he hosted “Saturday Night Live” in October 2008.
“I didn’t meet you before you hosted, and I remember calling or emailing Lorne [Michaels] and saying, ‘Let me know if he’s funny because we have a part coming up on ’30 Rock’ that would be great for him.’ And also to make sure you weren’t a dick,” Fey said.
“I mean, that’s a real thing. It’s not fun to work with people that aren’t fun,” Hamm replied.
“That’s one where you’re just like, ‘I won’t do that anymore.’ Life’s too short and the hours are too long,” said Fey.
Hamm played Dr. Drew Baird, Liz Lemon’s (Fey) charming pediatrician neighbor, for several episodes on “30 Rock” in 2009. Liz infamously utters the line, “I want to go to there,” to Drew in the sitcom.
In the Interview magazine piece, Hamm revealed that he found out he was joining the “30 Rock” cast while at “SNL.”
“That was such a fun moment for me too, because I remember coming back down to the host dressing room at SNL, and the phone rang. I’m in 30 Rock and it’s like, whose phones are these? Does somebody have this number? Who’s calling my dressing room?” he recalled.
“So I picked up and I think it was Robert Carlock on the other end who said, ‘Hey, would you like to do this? We have a part for you. It’s a totally normal doctor that won’t go weird at all, I promise,’” Hamm said.
Fey added, “So of course, the first episode you did with us, you were a normal doctor. And you bake. You were a normal human man. And by the end of this arc, you have hooks for hands.”
“And it turned out you were an incompetent doctor,” Fey joked to Hamm. “We ruined you.”
The two actors have since worked together on projects including “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, “Friends With Kids” and the 2024 “Mean Girls” remake.
Hamm’s latest project is the Apple TV+ drama series “Your Friends and Neighbors,” which premieres April 11. He plays a newly-unemployed New York hedge fund manager who uses criminal methods to maintain his rich lifestyle. The show also stars Olivia Munn and Amanda Peet.
During his chat with Fey, Hamm was asked if he prefers acting in drama or comedy projects more.
“I like the balance,” he said. “You go back and look at ‘Mad Men,’ there’s jokes.”
