Thom Christopher, the actor known for his work on the soap opera “One Life to Live,” has died.
Christopher passed away on Thursday in New York at the age of 84.
The star played villain Carlo Hesser on 56 episodes of the popular soap from 1991 until 2008.
Christopher’s cause of death is not known.
His friend Steven Bergman confirmed the news in a post on Facebook, revealing that the star had been “sick for quite awhile now” but “fought through it all like a champ.”
“We spoke 2-3 times a month and always had great long conversations,” Bergman wrote. “He was such a smart man who gave great advice and told such fantastic stories.”
He also shared that he visited Christopher in the hospital on Monday, saying that the actor “was not fully coherent as he was on a lot of medication.”
“When I said my goodbye to him I looked him right in the eyes, told him he was a wonderful man who lived an incredible life,” Bergman continued.
He praised Christopher as a “great actor who entertained and gave joy to so many people for so many years” and “a great friend to everyone who had the privilege of being his friend.”
“He comprehended every word I said and replied back ‘thank you,’” Bergman went on. “I gave him a kiss on the forehead and said goodbye.”
“You were a great man Thom, enjoy the eternal peace that you so richly deserve.”
The actor’s former co-star Anthony Crivello also shared a tribute to his “dear friend of many years” in a heartfelt post on Facebook.
“He was always a gentleman, always supportive, and he and his wife Judith who proceeded him in death, where [sic] always gracious to me and welcoming,” Crivello captioned two photos of him with Christopher.
Christopher’s wife, Judith Leverone, died in 2019 at the age 88.
“Thom and I worked together on the #abc daytime series #onelifetolive in the 1990s. We’re seen here with the lovely #audrylanders who played my sister, and Thom my father.”
Crivello added, “It was a wonderful time, difficult hours and long days, but joyful each minute.”
“May Thom fly on Wings of Angels to be beside his beloved Judith, and may they enjoy each other’s company once again, beside the ‘Pearly Gates’ of heaven,” he concluded his post.
Christopher’s work on “One Life to Live” won him a Daytime Emmy Award in 1992 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
Christopher was nominated twice more in the same category: in 1993 for “One Life to Live” and in 1994 for his work as the villainous Dante Partou in the soap “Loving.”
Born on October 5, 1940, in Queens, New York, Christopher attended Ithaca College before studying acting at New York’s famed Neighborhood Playhouse.
He began his professional life as an actor in the 1970s, landing roles in two Broadway plays, as Felix “Noël Coward in Two Keys” (1974) opposite Anne Baxter and Jessica Tandy, and as Apollodorus in George Bernard Shaw’s “Caesar and Cleopatra” (1977), starring Rex Harrison as Julius Caesar (a role Harrison also played in the 1963 Elizabeth Taylor film “Cleopatra”).
On TV, Christopher appeared on other soap operas besides “One Life to Live,” including “Guiding Light” and “The Edge of Night.” He also booked guest star roles on popular primetime series such as “T.J. Hooker,” “Murder, She Wrote” and “Law & Order.”
