Thom Christopher, the actor known for his work on the soap opera βOne Life to Live,β has died.
Christopher passed away on Thursday in New York at the age of 84.
The star played villain Carlo Hesser on 56 episodes of the popular soap from 1991 until 2008.
Christopherβs cause of death is not known.
His friend Steven Bergman confirmed the news in a post on Facebook, revealing that the star had been βsick for quite awhile nowβ but βfought through it all like a champ.β
βWe spoke 2-3 times a month and always had great long conversations,β Bergman wrote. βHe was such a smart man who gave great advice and told such fantastic stories.βΒ
He also shared that he visited Christopher in the hospital on Monday, saying that the actor βwas not fully coherent as he was on a lot of medication.β
βWhen I said my goodbye to him I looked him right in the eyes, told him he was a wonderful man who lived an incredible life,β Bergman continued.
He praised Christopher as a βgreat actor who entertained and gave joy to so many people for so many yearsβ and βa great friend to everyone who had the privilege of being his friend.β
βHe comprehended every word I said and replied back βthank you,’β Bergman went on. βI gave him a kiss on the forehead and said goodbye.β
βYou were a great man Thom, enjoy the eternal peace that you so richly deserve.β
The actorβs former co-star Anthony Crivello also shared a tribute to his βdear friend of many yearsβ in a heartfelt postΒ on Facebook.
βHe was always a gentleman, always supportive, and he and his wife Judith who proceeded him in death, where [sic] always gracious to me and welcoming,β Crivello captioned two photos of him with Christopher.
Christopherβs wife, Judith Leverone, died in 2019 at the age 88.
βThom and I worked together on the #abc daytime series #onelifetolive in the 1990s. Weβre seen here with the lovely #audrylanders who played my sister, and Thom my father.β
Crivello added, βIt was a wonderful time, difficult hours and long days, but joyful each minute.β
βMay Thom fly on Wings of Angels to be beside his beloved Judith, and may they enjoy each otherβs company once again, beside the βPearly Gatesβ of heaven,β he concluded his post.
Christopherβs work on βOne Life to Liveβ won him a Daytime Emmy Award in 1992 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
Christopher was nominated twice more in the same category: in 1993 for βOne Life to Liveβ and in 1994 for his work as the villainous Dante Partou in the soap βLoving.β
Born on October 5, 1940, in Queens, New York, Christopher attended Ithaca College before studying acting at New Yorkβs famed Neighborhood Playhouse.
He began his professional life as an actor in the 1970s, landing roles in two Broadway plays, as Felix βNoΓ«l Coward in Two Keysβ (1974) opposite Anne Baxter and Jessica Tandy, and as Apollodorus in George Bernard Shawβs βCaesar and Cleopatraβ (1977), starring Rex Harrison as Julius Caesar (a role Harrison also played in the 1963 Elizabeth Taylor film βCleopatraβ).
On TV, Christopher appeared on other soap operas besides βOne Life to Live,β includingΒ βGuiding Lightβ and βThe Edge of Night.β He also booked guest star roles on popular primetime series such as βT.J. Hooker,β βMurder, She Wroteβ and βLaw & Order.β
