“The Night Agent” star Gabriel Basso has opened up about what it was like playing Vice President JD Vance.
Basso, 30, who portrayed Vance, 40, in the 2020 film adaptation of his book “Hillbilly Elegy,” says he finds it “kind of weird” to be a part of the “timeline” that tracks the author-turned-politician’s rise to VP.
In an interview with Variety just days before Vance was inaugurated as Donald Trump’s vice president, Basso also described him as “a cool dude” while sidestepping a question about Vance’s political beliefs.
“It’s kind of weird to be included in that timeline,” he said. “When he’s thinking about his life — they made a movie of his book, and my name will always be in the description.”
The actor went on to reveal that he and Vance spoke before filming on “Hillbilly Elegy” began.
“We talked a little bit. He’s a cool dude. We’re both from the Midwest. We just talked about life — about growing up in the woods.”
Basso’s returns as FBI agent Peter Sutherland when Netflix drops the much-anticipated second season of “The Night Agent” on Thursday. One of Netflix’s most-viewed series ever, the thriller was watched for roughly 812 million hours at the end of 2023 (it was released in March of that year).
Despite his success, Basso, who has been acting since he was a teen, is looking to leave the profession behind.
“Right now, I’m doing acting to the best of my ability. But at the same time, I don’t feel like a productive part of society,” he said. “If I build a stone wall — that’s a thing. I’ve served the community. I think there’s more important things that a 30-year-old man can do with his life.”
He added, “If all actors were to die tomorrow. society would continue. This business is not important in the scheme of society.”
“Storytelling is important, but some kid has a grandfather reading. They don’t need me to tell stories.”
Of politics, Basso also shared that, in his own estimation, he’s “not really a political person.” However, he also told Variety, “I think our form of government is illegitimate. It’s never supposed to have been a federal government. That’s not what we started as — but everything is federal now.”
Appearing on “Good Morning America” recently, Basso also said that he believes “The Night Agent” has struck a chord with viewers because of “an inherent distrust for government.” He also made a quip on the Jan. 14 episode of “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon” about how “the government would never hurt you.”
As for his post-acting plans, Basso said he wants to create a non-profit to provide better training to police officers, including time on shooting ranges and “most importantly, mental performance.”
“Police officers are representatives of a government people don’t trust,” he said. “And in order to make that government real socially, people need to see something tangible.”
When prompted about the view that police forces aren’t suffering from a lack of funding, Basso responded,“I would err on the side of, I’d rather a police officer be well-trained, composed, and if they do mess up, we hold them accountable.”
Season 2 of “The Night Agent” premieres Thursday on Netflix.
