Gucci Mane has his wife to thank for keeping him on the straight and narrow.
The โWake Up in the Skyโ rapper, 45, revealed that he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in his new memoir, โEpisodes,โ which was released Oct. 14.
Mane and his wife of eight years, Keyshia Kaโoir, opened up about the trap music pioneerโs diagnosis โ and how she helps him manage it โ during a joint appearance on โThe Breakfast Clubโ radio show on Monday.
Although Kaโoir, 40, admitted that she keeps his episodes hidden from the public eye by removing his access to social media.
โI delete Instagram. I delete everything,โ she shared. โEven if I got to change his password, Iโm changing it because I donโt need the public to know heโs having an episode.โ
Kaโoir further explained how she has learned to pinpoint if the โDope Loveโ rapper is struggling.
โHe doesnโt speak to you. He wants to be left alone. He donโt eat. He does not sleep. Text messages, thereโs a period after each word,โ she said, adding that Mane would spout โmeanโ things at her, and they would end up arguing back and forth before โsnapping out of it right then.โ
Elsewhere during the radio show, the couple discussed watching other celebs and their families suffer through mental health issues publicly.
Kaโoir mentioned that seeing Kim Kardashian struggle during her marriage to Kanye West before their Feb. 2021 split โbotheredโ her, and that she reached out to the Skims founder to offer support.
After โBreakfast Clubโ co-host Charlamagne tha God brought up Kardashianโs recent claim that West once gave away five Lamborghinis during a bout with his bipolar disorder, Mane admitted that he would give away money and jewelry during his own episodes.
โI gave away jewelry. Jewelry costs so much,โ the โRumorsโ rapper, whose real name is Radric Delantic Davis, shared. โI gave my friends jewelry. And they knew I wasnโt well, theyโd take it. They was taking advantage.โ
Mane ultimately decided to seek professional help following a scary episode he suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic.
โAfter that, I was like, man, I got to really just hold myself accountable and take care of my health,โ he recalled. โI donโt never want to have an episode again. If I have to see a therapist, if I have to take medicine. Iโll do what I need to do to get better.โ
The โEverybody Lookingโ artist sought help for the sake of his family. Since marrying in 2017, Mane and Kaโoir have welcomed son Ice, 4, and daughter Iceland, 1.
โI donโt want to raise a family, and then my mental health is gone,โ he said. โWhat if I have an episode I canโt come back from?โ
Nearly five years since his last episode, and the Grammy-nominated rapper is now in therapy and taking medication to help manage his bipolar disorder and schizophrenia diagnoses.
โYou got to do the work yourself, if you want to really get better,โ Mane concluded. โPeople can want it for you, but you still got to want it more than they do.โ
