Patrick Swayze’s younger brother, Sean Swayze, has died. He was 63.
Sean’s son and Patrick’s nephew, Jesse, confirmed the devastating news in a statement to TMZ on Wednesday. He revealed that his father passed away in Los Angeles on Dec. 15.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Sean died “of an acute upper gastrointestinal bleed and severe metabolic acidosis brought on by cirrhosis of the liver,” per a death record obtained by the outlet.
Rachel Leon, Patrick and Sean Swayze’s cousin, confirmed the tragic news further in an Instagram post shared on Dec. 17.
“I’m heartbroken to share that my cousin Sean Swayze passed away today,” she wrote alongside two sweet snaps of the deceased. “This is a picture he took recently for us to promote the Dirty Dancing crawfish theme.”
“My daughter, a marketing manager, came up with this idea to honor our late cousin, Patrick Swayze,” she continued. “We sent the T-shirts to Sean, who wore them proudly for us. He was always fun and full of life.”
Rachel added that Sean had planned to visit her in Texas before his sudden death and that she was “really looking forward to” seeing him.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his brother Don Swayze and his children, Cassie Swayze, Kyle Swayze and Jesse Swayze,” she concluded. “We are praying hard for the entire family during this difficult time. Please know that we love you and are always here for you.”
Sean’s passing comes just over 16 years after his famous brother died from pancreatic cancer in September 2009. The “Dirty Dancing” star was 57.
Patrick, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer in January 2008, opened up about his battle with the deadly disease during a chat with ABC’s Barbara Walters shortly before his death.
“I’d say five years is pretty wishful thinking,” he said in early 2009. “Two years seems likely if you’re going to believe statistics. I want to last until they find a cure, which means I’d better get a fire under it.”
The “Ghost” star, however, died just months later. He was married to writer and dancer Lisa Niemi, now 69, at the time of his death.
“Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months,” his publicist, Annett Wolf, said in a statement on Sept. 14, 2009.
Patrick and Sean’s father, Jesse Wayne Swayze, passed away in November 1982 at the age of 57. Their mother, Patsy Yvonne Helen Swayze, died in September 2013 at the age of 86.
Besides their respective families, both Patrick and Sean are survived by their brother, actor Don Swayze, 67, and sister, actress Bambi Swayze, 66. Their other sister, Vicky Swayze, tragically died of suicide in 1994 at the age of 45.
