Odessa A’zion is stepping away from her latest project.
The actress, 25, announced that she has exited “Deep Cuts” weeks before the movie starts shooting in February.
A’zion received public backlash after she was cast as a Jewish character with Mexican heritage.
The “Marty Supreme” star, who is Jewish but does not have Mexican heritage, wrote on her Instagram Stories on Wednesday: “Guys!! I am with ALL of you and I am NOT doing this movie. F–k that. I’m OUT.”
“Deep Cuts” is a film adaptation of the 2025 novel by the same name.
A’zion came under fire after an X user posted a screenshot on Monday of an alleged conversation between a reader and the book’s author Holly Brickley.
“I was just wondering if Zoe’s character will be remaining Latina or the character’s been rewritten?” the fan inquired.
“Surely it will be rewritten!” Brickley replied. “Which happens all the time. For the record in the book Zoe is is half Jewish and half Mexican.”
She added, “But in the script it is not specified. Also I have nothing to do with casting.”
Brickley’s response sparked immediate outrage, with one critic writing on X: “Zoe is supposed to be a poc mexican… very disappointed with the cast, especially since it’s mentioned several times in the book.”
A second social media user noted: “How about casting an actual Latina for the role of Zoe Gutierrez?!?!!”
A’zion responded to the fandom’s concerns, continuing on her Instagram Stories: “THANK YOU guys for bringing this to my attention. I AGREE WITH EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU! This is why I love you guys. I’m so sorry that this happened.”
“It is SO important for me to let you in on how it all went down: I went in for Percy, but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes! I’m so pissed y’all, I hadn’t read the book and should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting…and now that I know what I know???”
For A’zion, she sees this as an opportunity to let the character be portrayed by someone of Mexican heritage.
“I’d never take a role from someone else that’s meant to do it,” the “Fresh Kills” actress explained. “That SHOULD do it! That’s not me. There are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role and I am NOT one of them,” A’zion concluded her statement. “I can’t wait to see who it ends up being.”
A’zion explained that she had been “so busy with other work” and had been trying to “carve out time to read” the book.
Although she wishes she “found that time sooner” and “clocked her name,” now that she is up to speed, she “can not do it knowing more about Zoe now.”
A’zion was playing Zoe Gutierrez, the best friend of music critic Percy Marks (Cailee Spaeny).
A’zion was set to star opposite Drew Starkey and Cailee Spaeny in the 2000s-set story about two music obsessed 20-somethings as they chase ambition, belonging and adulthood. Spaeny is set to play music critic Percy with Starkey as songwriter Joe, two music lovers who end up creating a working and romantic relationship.
Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butler were initially cast to play Percy and Joe but ended up dropping out of the project due to scheduling issues.
A’zion has been linked to Starkey, 32, since 2025. The two have yet to publicly confirm their romance.
The “I Love LA” star is currently gearing up for the Actor Awards on March 1, where she is nominated for best supporting actress for her performance in “Marty Supreme.”
“What the hell?” A’zion told Deadline after the nominees were announced earlier this month. “My brain is still loading because I just woke up. I just talked to Timothée [Chalamet] for a second and it’s crazy. I don’t even know what to say or think.”
Chalamet himself is up for best actor at the award ceremony.
She added, “He was just like, ‘Congratulations. We did it.’ Just a bunch of nice things, and it’s so exciting to be nominated together.”
