Odessa Aβzion is stepping away from her latest project.
The actress, 25, announced that she has exited βDeep Cutsβ weeks before the movie starts shooting in February.
Aβzion received public backlash after she was cast as a Jewish character with Mexican heritage.
The βMarty Supremeβ star, who is Jewish but does not have Mexican heritage, wrote on her Instagram Stories on Wednesday: βGuys!! I am with ALL of you and I am NOT doing this movie. Fβk that. Iβm OUT.βΒ
βDeep Cutsβ is a film adaptation of the 2025 novel by the same name.
Aβzion came under fire after an X userΒ posted a screenshot on MondayΒ of an alleged conversation between a reader and the bookβs author Holly Brickley.
βI was just wondering if Zoeβs character will be remaining Latina or the characterβs been rewritten?β the fan inquired.
βSurely it will be rewritten!β Brickley replied. βWhich happens all the time. For the record in the book Zoe is is half Jewish and half Mexican.β
She added, βBut in the script it is not specified. Also I have nothing to do with casting.β
Brickleyβs response sparked immediate outrage, with one criticΒ writing on X: βZoe is supposed to be a poc mexicanβ¦ very disappointed with the cast, especially since itβs mentioned several times in the book.β
A second social media user noted: βHow about casting an actual Latina for the role of Zoe Gutierrez?!?!!β
Aβzion responded to the fandomβs concerns, continuing on her Instagram Stories: βTHANK YOU guys for bringing this to my attention. I AGREE WITH EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU! This is why I love you guys. Iβm so sorry that this happened.βΒ
βIt is SO important for me to let you in on how it all went down: I went in for Percy, but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes! Iβm so pissed yβall, I hadnβt read the book and should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before acceptingβ¦and now that I know what I know???β
For Aβzion, she sees this as an opportunity to let the character be portrayed by someone of Mexican heritage.
βIβd never take a role from someone else thatβs meant to do it,β the βFresh Killsβ actress explained. βThat SHOULD do it! Thatβs not me. There are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role and I am NOT one of them,β Aβzion concluded her statement. βI canβt wait to see who it ends up being.β
Aβzion explained that she had been βso busy with other workβ and had been trying to βcarve out time to readβ the book.
Although she wishes she βfound that time soonerβ and βclocked her name,β now that she is up to speed, she βcan not do it knowing more about Zoe now.β
Aβzion was playing Zoe Gutierrez, the best friend of music critic Percy Marks (Cailee Spaeny).
Aβzion was set to star opposite Drew Starkey and Cailee Spaeny in the 2000s-set story about two music obsessed 20-somethings as they chase ambition, belonging and adulthood. Spaeny is set to play music critic Percy with Starkey as songwriter Joe, two music lovers who end up creating a working and romantic relationship.
Saoirse RonanΒ and Austin ButlerΒ were initially cast to play Percy and Joe but ended up dropping out of the project due to scheduling issues.
Aβzion has been linked to Starkey, 32, since 2025. The two have yet to publicly confirm their romance.
The βI Love LAβ star is currently gearing up for the Actor Awards on March 1, where she is nominated for best supporting actress for her performance in βMarty Supreme.β
βWhat the hell?β Aβzion told Deadline after the nominees were announced earlier this month. βMy brain is still loading because I just woke up. I just talked to TimothΓ©e [Chalamet] for a second and itβs crazy. I donβt even know what to say or think.β
Chalamet himself is up for best actor at the award ceremony.
She added, βHe was just like, βCongratulations. We did it.β Just a bunch of nice things, and itβs so exciting to be nominated together.β
