Letβs hope they stay together for an encore.
Morgan Freeman rang in 2025 by performing a duet of Al Greenβs βLetβs Stay Togetherβ with none other than Green himself.
The duo sang the 1972 R&B classic at Freemanβs Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, Mississippi, on New Yearβs Eve.
The club posted a video of the performance on Instagram, captioning the clip, βMorgan Freeman & Al Green LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!β
Green, 78, commented on the post with a party popper emoji.
Freeman, 87, also shared about the evening on social, posting two photos from the evening on X (formerly known as Twitter).
βWe ushered in the New Year with Al Green and Kingfish at Ground Zero last night,β the star wrote. βHappy New Year, everyone!β
CNN reporter Omar Jimenez was at the Oscar winnerβs blues bar and caught the unexpected performance.
βMorgan Freeman got on stage to make his βdream come true.β He said it was to sing with Al Green,β Jimenez captioned a clip of Freeman and Greenβs duet.
Jimenez also interviewed Freeman live on CNN during the New Yearβs Eve broadcast.
Asked about the clubβs origins, Freeman explained that he decided to create the bar after visiting Clarksdale and finding there were not many blues venues in town.
βWe donβt really have em. Didnβt exist,β Freeman recalls the mayor of Clarksdale telling him.
βSo the decision was made right then β you got to to have a blues club. We got to do something,β he said. βThere was a little club called Crossroads, but [there was] no guarantee that it would be up and running on Friday night or something. So we built this.β
With the help of co-owners Eric Meier, Howard Stovall and the late Bill Luckett, Freeman opened Ground Zero Blues Club in 2001 βto celebrate the areaβs rich blues heritage and to provide a venue in which it can continue,β according to the venueβs website.
Clarksdale is believed to be where blues music began.
Freeman recently paid tribute to another famous jazz-lover, his friend Clint Eastwood. The βLionessβ star presented Eastwood, 94, with an award named in the βJuror #2β directorβs honor at the 2024 Monterey Jazz Festival in California in September.
βIt was a great pleasure presenting my friend, Clint Eastwood, with the inaugural Clint Eastwood Award for Cultural Leadership at the @MontereyJazzFestival last weekend,β he captioned a photo of him and Eastwood on Instagram.
βClint is a true musician: pianist, composer and a jazz aficionado!β he added. βWe had a wonderful time listening to the incredible music of Kyle Eastwood and Mavis Staples!β
