Michelle Buteau isnβt laughing.
The comedian blasted Dave Chappelle for frequently making jokes about the transgender community during a set in her new Netflix comedy special βMichelle Buteau: A Buteau-ful Mind at Radio City Music Hall,β which was released on Tuesday.
Buteau, 47, brought up Chappelle after sharing an anecdote about a βblack lesbian friendβ of hers.
Some in the audience laughed at the story, while others appeared uncomfortable. Buteau drew attention to the diversity of those reactions, saying that comedians should be able βto tell jokes and stories and not disparage a whole community.β
βWe can do that. We can make it funny,β Buteau told the crowd. βWe just have to work at it, right?β
Turning to Chappelle, she said, βSo, if you ever run into Dave Chappelle can you let him know that sβt?
βI donβt think he knows that sβt.β
Jokingly referring to Chappelle as βthe GOAT,β which typically abbreviates the moniker βgreatest of all time,β Buteau said that where heβs concerned, βGOATβ actually stands for βgoing off on trans people.β
βDave, itβs not funny. Itβs dangerous,β she said to applause. βMake it funny.
βI canβt believe somebody would make millions and millions of dollars for making people feel unsafe. That is so wild to me, truly.
βIβm manifesting this sβt tonight,β she went on. βThis is a Radio City Music Hall takeover, and Iβm gonna tell everybody I wanna make millions and millions of dollars for making people feel safe, seen, secure, heard and entertained.β
Buteau elaborated on her feelings toward Chappelle in an interview with USA Today, published on Tuesday.
βIβm not saying you canβt say things β Iβm just saying, βCan you make it funny?β Because it doesnβt feel funny,β she told the outlet. βYouβre hurting people andΒ youβre making it dangerous.
βAnd itβs not just Chappelle β itβs part of the culture that I donβt understand,β Buteau continued. βWhen people say, βWe canβt do what we used to do.β Yeah! Slavery used to be legal, you guys. Sometimes weβve got to move forward, and Iβm sorry if itβs different, but wrap your little mind around it.β
Chappelle came under fire after he made jokes about the transgender community in his 2021 Netflix comedy special βThe Closer,β which was seen by many as being transphobic.
Undeterred, the comedian refused to apologize and even doubled down on his comments in βThe Dreamer,β his 2023 special for the streaming giant.
