Meghan Markle has revealed the reason she opted out of filming her Netflix show βWith Love, Meghan,β at her sprawling Montecito, Calif., mansion.
The Duchess of Sussex, 43, appeared at the TIME100 Summit in NYC Wednesday, where she spoke about her lifestyle brand As Ever, as well as her cooking series which premiered on the streamer last month.
During her conversation with Timeβs CEO Jessica Sibley, Markle touched on the controversial decision to film the Netflix show at an $8 million farmhouse, owned by local philanthropists Tom and Sherrie Cipolla.
βWhen people say, βWhy didnβt you [film in] your house?β Well, I have kids coming home for their nap, and 80 people in the kitchen isnβt really the childhood memory Iβd want for them to have,β the mom of two said.
The βSuitsβ alum shares son Archie, 5, and daughter Lilibet, 3, with husband Prince Harry.
βWe were really fortunate to find something close by,β she said, adding that having boundaries in place is βhow I take care of myself.β
Markleβs Netflix show premiered last month as part of the SussexesβΒ $100 millionΒ dealΒ with the streamer.
The eight-part series, which featured special guests like Abigail Spencer and Mindy Kaling, saw Markle offer up a βhow-toβ guide for hosting friends at home.
The show hasΒ been bashed by criticsΒ andΒ earned lower viewership numbersΒ than her and her husbandβs 2022 series βHarry & Meghan.β
Still, NetflixΒ greenlit the series for Season 2Β β and already filmed the episodes.
Many critics slammed the duchess for not being relatable β feedback she has since responded to.
βDonβt they know my life hasnβt always been like this?β she said, reminding Moskin that she was not always married to a prince.
Elsewhere, the former actress explained that she has a strong desire to continue working β despite marrying into royalty in 2018.
βI need to work, and I love to work,β she said, noting that she has had jobs since she was a teenager. βThis is a way I can connect my home life and my work.β
This isnβt the former royalβs first time opting for a rental to shoot content in.
In βHarry & Meghan,β the couple filmed interviews in a $30 million estate nearby, opting not to showcase their own lavish pad.
They did, however, show the houseβs sprawling garden, which boasts the familyβs chicken coop that is adorned with a sign that reads βArchieβs Chick Inn. Established 2021.β
