She has her co-starβs back.
Margot Robbie has defended Jacob Elordi after his casting as Heathcliff in Emerald Fennellβs upcoming βWuthering Heightsβ film adaptation drew major backlash from critics.
βI get it,β the βBarbieβ star, 35, acknowledged during an interview withΒ British Vogue published Thursday. βThereβs nothing else to go off at this point until people see the movie.β
βI saw him play Heathcliff, and he is Heathcliff,β she continued. βIβd say, just wait. Trust me, youβll be happy.β
Both Robbie and Elordi, 28, faced backlash when βWuthering Heightsβ was first announced in July 2024.
While some fans criticized the βI, Tonyaβ actress for being too old to play Catherine, who is described as βalmost 17β with βbrown ringletsβ at the outset of Emily BrontΓ«βs 1847 novel, others chided Elordi due to his race.
Although the color of Heathcliffβs skin is left ambiguous in the original book, he is described at one point as a βdark-skinned gipsyβ who wishes he had βlight hair and a fair skin.β
Robbie, however, insisted that the βEuphoriaβ star is the right fit for the role and gushed about Elordiβs version of her onscreen lover.
βItβs a character that has this lineage of other great actors whoβve played him, from Laurence Olivier to Richard Burton and Ralph Fiennes to Tom Hardy,β she noted.
βTo be a part of that is special,β Robbie added. βHeβs incredible, and I believe in him so much. I honestly think heβs our generationβs Daniel Day-Lewis.β
Casting director Kharmel Cochrane, who worked with Fennell on βSaltburnβ before joining βWuthering Heights,β said something similar over the summer while discussing the upcoming movie at theΒ SandsΒ International Film Festival of St. Andrews.
βThereβs definitely going to be some English lit fans that are not going to be happy,β she acknowledged in August, per Entertainment Weekly.
βJust wait until you see it, and then you can decide whether you want to shoot me or not,β Cochrane joked. βBut you really donβt need to be accurate. Itβs just a book. That is not based on real life. Itβs all art.β
Elsewhere during her new interview, the βSuicide Squadβ star opened up about being three months postpartum when they began shooting βWuthering Heights.β
Robbie and her husband, Tom Ackerley, welcomed their first child together in October 2024.
βSo I was in a very different headspace,β she shared. βI didnβt do my usual routine. It was more haphazard. And I remember saying to Emerald, βWhat if Iβm not prepared enough?’β
βShe kept saying, βI donβt want you to prepare. I just need you to be in the moment,’β she added. βWhich was a lovely way of relieving my anxiety. It was about being in my body as opposed to my head.β
As for the movie itself, Robbie assured fans that it may not be as βvery, very raunchyβ as some might expect.
βI think people will be surprised,β she explained. βNot to say there arenβt sexual elements and that itβs not provocative β it definitely is provocative β but itβs more romantic than provocative.β
βThis is a big epic romance,β Robbie concluded.
βWuthering HeightsβΒ is scheduled to hit theaters Feb. 14, 2026.
